Like the ones you see in tesco, rug doctor I think...

Worth it? are they a hassle to use, and are they any good??

Having the bathroom re-done and the mess is biblical! Just weighing up whether its worth paying someone to do the carpets or whether I should.. over to the STW hive mind!!

Rug Doctor is great. Brought our carpets back to nearly new. Takes a while but worth it

Aye did a good job here too, the dirt that comes off is amazing, wouldn't say "like new" for me though, my carpets pretty old.

Depends how bad the dirt is though.

They will remove some mud and light staining, but don't expect them to remove wine, blood, puke and other bodily fluids.

Pay someone - the machines will clean better, dry MUCH quicker and they know what they are doing (ie, if the carpet shrinks, it is their responsibility). They also have specialist cleaners to remove particular types of dirt so can spot clean most stuff off.

Only buy one if you think you will use it more than once every 10 years.
