Its a bit like finding out who Lukes father was in the later movie. Shocking !
and I give you the words of Mike Skinner of the Streets
That's the religion I live by! 😉
"Alleged Legends"
Some people live their lives by a little red book
The points for right lying out and guides them good
They never really mimic every word by eye
'Cuz if they did they'd be in a whole world of strife
The book's quite old school, but then it was tough
It contains some quite experimental justice
The thinking people are thinking that without this book
That without these verses we'd pillage and murder but,
Following this red book word for word
Leads you to actually pillage and murder
Could it be so what we think to be right,
Is simply the opinion that survived?
Do what you think's right, and you will feel alright
'Cuz when you're bad you will feel sad
That's the religion I live by
There's a bloke in the book who made everything
He knows every individual and every trick in them
Way above emotion, never getting stressed
But when men choose against him, gets jealous
People fight for him in crippling wars
But since he has the power of infinite awe
We're merely itching on futilities floor
Should we really be needing to assist him at all?
If he loves us all, knowing all we think
Should he only like people with faith in him?
Given I can't control what I truly believe,
Can I be forgiven for only believing who I see?
Do what you think's right, and you will feel alright
'Cuz when you're bad you will feel sad
That's the religion I live by
Do what you think's right, and you will feel alright
'Cuz when you're bad you will feel sad
That's the religion I live by
Could it be time to avoid this bush?
So we wouldn't be blind when joining up coulds
Could we see both sides of the coin for the good?
Breed less strife on our voyage for good?
Getting threatened by men with questions
We'll never get anywhere rejecting evidence
Could we test everything instead of betting,
On alleged legends?
If we teach that it's right to blindly believe
If we reach to the sky to define our meaning
Well I agree what's right will keep driving people to fight with people
Do what you think's right, and you will feel alright
'Cuz when you're bad you will feel sad
That's the religion I live by
Didn't think this was new news...???
Wasn't there was a bit of a fuss a few years ago about Mary Magdalene, The Last Supper and stuff like that...
You've been where?
Pontius Pilate, crucifixion, rising from the dead? My mother told me it was a mistake to marry a carpenter, always out on the lash she said. 12 apostles? 12 bloody drunks more like.
And you've not fixed the cupboards in the kitchen yet...
Shaun Ryder had it
He never a sad man
Or so call mean bad man
Or that’s just down to the strain
Well he hand out fish man
With his centred parted sun tan
Then cut all the lame
Who got the biggest
Who got the biggest
Who got the richest brain
Jesus was a black man
No Jesus was Batman
No, no, no, no, ****
That was Bruce Wayne
Don’t talk to me about heroes
Most of these men sing like Surfs
Don’t talk to me about your big big heroes
Most of these men sing like surfs

Are you thinking of that book/film by Dan Brown ?
Ah, the first religion thread of Christmas and it's only September 🙂
Starts humming carols
Where once were men are now but sheep
-a fiction and far cry
From planet earth's proud animal
-who would be you and I.
Alas, our forebears drank the cup of poisoned alibi
And made excuses far and wide,
and made God in the sky.
This boogaloo's now round the world
-bad trips for everyone.
No more the man of paradise
or the Celt of Albion.
They queue like burning moths to spread the all-time vicious lie.
You christians destroyed our tribe
-I'll fight you till I die.
And you can cut me down for what I said
But goodness lives where God is dead.
The history of religion is the history of the State
Incestuous exploiters of a catalogue of hate.
The man of peace was over-run by armies of the "Lord"
Who signed their names to any war
and sang to praise the sword.
The mission heads for outer space
the voices ring and swell
With aeons of self-righteousness
the senseless echoes knell
The words get much more meaningless
-even plainer to tell
That those who would pronounce this God
are those who make this hell.
And you can cut me down for what I said
But goodness lives where God is dead.
LOVE IS THE great triumph over christianity.
She made a fool of silly priests. She mocked authority.
She filled her bed with happiness. She gripped his loins for joy
And felt ecstatic agonies and screamed the sweetest cry.
Her children are the legacy of failure to be chained
An everasting mutiny of flowers where it rained.
They rise out of oppression
They speak with one accord.
The fountains breath- the spirit lives-
The future rests assured.
And to say that God is dead presupposes that
he was at some time alive.
Ooooo what a young fool I am
Whatever he was, the gospels make Jesus out to be a real old bleeding heart lefty, which is always worth reminding the religious-right-moral-high-ground-dwellers. (my homphobic party-whip local Conservative MP for starters) 😀
Are you thinking of that book/film by Dan Brown ?
Not specifically - but it was all part of the discussion and media coverage sparked by a few books that were around at the time...
i think the mary mags stuff was well discussed long before dan brown innexplicably
scored a hit with davinci code
as for the jesus stuff, im sure he geniunely was a revolutionary cult leader and as such bet he shagged loads of birds!
im willing to bet that someone will track down his descendents one day if they can find some dna from his toothbrush or something
Can we change it to "Christ on a Wife"? or is the whole point of that expression that Jebus would be unlikely to around at the time of the modern pedal cycle.
I wanted to register myself as " JC Joinery-- est over 2,000 years "-
Never mind Jesus's wife(or wives), what about his children?
Bet they had a tough time in school
"My dad was called Brian ,honest he wasn't the Messiah"
He didn't die on the cross (after all he was only up there for a few hours and it usually takes a couple of days to see you off), but he was looked after by his mate Joseph who hid him till his hands healed. Then he went back to his Buddhist home in Kashmir (where he'd been from the age of 11 till hge was 30) did a bit of preaching & stuff until he died in his eighties. You can go and see his tomb in Srinigar, Kashmir if you don't believe it.
Don't know what the story is,as said it would have been stranger to not be married. Priests have been allowed to marry for longer of the Christian period than not. Second Lateran Council (1139) outlawed hunka-chunka,and that was because some of them were a bit too eager to spread the err....seed... of christianity. Usual; somebody always spoils it for EVERYBODY else...
Given that it's widely accepted amongst the theists that Jesus wasn't actually born on 25/12/. does that mean we can similarly dismiss the rest of that pretty picture as tosh too
Yep. The date was probably selected for the same reason - it corresponded to an existing festival (winter solstice?)
Married ?
If modern Christian men of stature are anything to go by then wouldn't he be gay or a paedo?
It possible does say wife...but what did he mean by that?
wife (n.)
O.E. wif "woman," from P.Gmc. *wiban (cf. O.S., O.Fris. wif, O.N. vif, Dan., Swed. viv, M.Du., Du. wijf, O.H.G. wib, Ger. Weib), of uncertain origin. Du. wijf now means, in slang, "girl, babe," having softened somewhat from earlier sense of "bitch."Some proposed PIE roots include *weip- "to twist, turn, wrap," perhaps with sense of "veiled person" (see vibrate); or *ghwibh-, a proposed root meaning "shame," also "pudenda," but the only examples of it are wife and Tocharian (a lost IE language of central Asia) kwipe, kip "female pudenda."
The modern sense of "female spouse" began as a specialized sense in Old English; the general sense of "woman" is preserved in midwife, old wives' tale, etc. Middle English sense of "mistress of a household" survives in housewife; and later restricted sense of "tradeswoman of humble rank" in fishwife. Wife-swapping is attested from 1954.
FYI, I'm an athiest married to a catholic...not sure why that's relevant, but thought say anyway.
legend - MemberHoly chart and stuff
Tough game of Top Trumps that one. Reckon i'd go with Dionysus as the star card for his double-hard status (king of kings, alpha and omega), but if you're not picking category he'd be undone by not having a crew to back him.
McHamish - MemberIt possible does say wife...but what did he mean by that?
Er, "wife" is the english translation, it doesn't actually say "wife"- it's coptic. So the english etymology isn't relevant.
Er...My point was, what ever is said in the text, did he mean 'wife' in it's modern context. As some may be aware, the press like to present things in such a way that papers sell etc.
Er...I wasn't suggesting that it actually said wife.
Er.......
Actual Laugh Out Loud at spasmic gherkin 😆
My point was, what ever is said in the text, did he mean 'wife' in it's modern context
Obviously not, the author had no idea what the concept of wife would be 2000 years in the future on a European island now did he?

Ok, i'll reword my comment.
What ever is said in the text, does the Coptic word for wife bear any resemblance to what the Engligh word 'wife' means in it's modern context?
