I seem to have lost my dentist fitted gumshield, so was wondering how far over the counter ones have progressed in the last 10 years since I burnt most of the inside of my mouth and couldn't get it moulded remotely near to the shape of my mouth. Are they anywhere near as bad still?

(awaits TJ telling me not to bother as there is no scientific proof they would help in an impact ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

They have moved on a good bit, but the custom ones have really got better as well.

The hockey one I used was ok (heat & bite)

Not sure they'd help in an impact either.....

It is for rugby so mainly a confidence thing. Always had one (for last 18years) so feels weird without

I had denitst fitted for kickboxing and rugby purposes (so got more impact than I would like).

Was far better than the heat and bite option I previously used IMO.

Only ever had dentist ones. A fair few got stuck on the inside of the tumble drier.... ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Saved my teeth more than once playing hockey. Shame I didn't have a helmet/facemask on the last time I played, though. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Think the shockdoctor ones have a pretty good reputation, personally though would always use a dentsits one, found I could breath much easier, more comfortable and fitted properly.

May cost a few more quid but well worth the extra in my opinion.

FWIW I used mine for kickboxing and boxing and was surpisingly good at using my head as a punchbag...

Opro do a good range from DIY up to custom fit.

Opro are good in that if you're not happy with the fit they allow you to exchange for either the same model(at no extra cost)or to upgrade to a higher model.

Got my son a top of the range DIY one but couldn't get it to fit properly - so upgraded to custom fit.

Cheers

I use a shock doctor one for waterpolo - never used a dentist fitted one so can't comment, but the shockdoc ones seem to be the best of the DIY ones I've used - no breathing probs at all for me.

I always use O-Pro. http://www.opro.com/
Like a dentist one-they send you a kit and you make the mould of the teeth yourself with putty and send it to them where they make the shield for you. really easy-comes with a step by step audio guide. Available in loads of colours, national flags etc

I wouldn't risk it with the DIY option. What are your teeth worth to you?
