So I'm just looking at last minute stuff, but have never been skiing in Scandinavia. Any thoughts on whether the sun will actually be above the horizon or will we be trudging along in the dark for a week?

Alternative suggestions most welcome if this is the case...

In the south, it'll be 9.30am til 3.30pm.

Above the arctic circle (that's the definition of the Arctic circle btw) the sun will be down but it's not dark. The sun is only just below the horizon and combined with snow everywhere you get a lovely sort of ambient bluey glow everywhere so you can still see. I really want to go and experience it.

Finland is very special place.

Finland's a long country so it depends where you're heading to, but expect sun rise just before ten and sun set around three.

I am off to Suomi at the end of Jan to see my beloved Jokipojat, it is +1 in Joensuu at the moment but set to get down to - 10 by the end of the week.

Molgrips is so right about the light quality, with all the snow about it doesn't really get dark, hard to explain. Lots of the ski trails were lit up around Joensuu so you would find people skiing at all times.

Suomi is AWESOME ๐Ÿ˜€

Pigface makes a good point - there are groomed ski trails all over the place provided as a public utility. I think the local authorities groom them and many are lit. You can ski from almost the centre of Helsinki to the National Park outside the city, 10 miles or more probably, and into loads of suburbs, all on groomed trails. The same trails are bike paths in the summer.
