A lot of the minicabs near us like to creep forward at red lights, into the advance stop box, over that then eventually stop across the pedestrian crossing. The light turns to green and they sit for a couple of seconds then trundle off at walking pace. Really weird
get it round here too, not just cab drivers tho, people if "fast" cars too, never sure if they've managed to roll so far they can't see any lights anymore.

Waves at Martymac, if I know the timing of the lights and it's quiet I'll sloooowly rollup to the lights hopeully not stopping, (staying behind the stop line while on red) easier to pull away innit, specially with a weedy little engine like ours.

This reminds me of one of my first lessons with my old man in his Fiesta. It was an old Y reg with a poor handbrake. I was getting on not too bad one evening until we came to a rail road crossing. The barriers dropped down and I slowed down to a stop and pulled the handbrake on... well, not on.. right up til it was near vertical as the cable pulley near the rear axle popped off! You should have seen the clutch control that eve. Infact you should have heard that clutch control. The thing is you wouldnt have as my old man was screaming something along the lines of 'aw fer f-sakes you snapped the f-in handbrake...awww,what a man ya are!' just as I'm trying to stop the car from rolling into the guy behind me (for the first time ever) as well as not put it through the barrier into a train.

Sweaty palm moment.

I avoid creeping as my Audi has auto hold. I also have an Orange tho so I must be doomed and most definitely categorised as a c**t!

As a frequent flying, Orange 5 owning, non Audi driving (insert stereotype of your choice here)what really winds me up is the people that stand up the moment that the plane touches down, forget waiting for the seat belt sign. We're still doing 150mph and they think it's fine to open the over head locker!
However, I do enjoy flying with Italians as they break out into applause as soon as you touch down. They almost seem disappointed when the pilot doesn't come out immediately to be showered in flowers whilst bowing. Maybe its because he actually has to park the thing first?

Hmm, my car automaticly applies a parking break when I come to a complete stop, and then even turns the engine off. Also works as a 'roll back' break on hills. This means I'm adopting different ways of driving in traffic to when I was taught and even to the drivers on here. I must be a bad man.
PS - not an Audi, although I am trading in two Audis for one newer one, so that makes me only half the cock I was right?

Stop at lights put in neutral and apply footbrake.
Light changes, clutch in, put in first and take off.
If you're on an incline you may need to do it a bit quicker to avoid rollback.
I'm not sure whats so hard about it.
I don't know why people creep or ride the clutch at lights - I always assumed it was boredom rather than aggression.

effectively, they never actually come to a complete stop

Thats me I slow down a long way from the lights try to slowly roll it so when I get to the stop line, the lights have changed.

I dunno why I do it just something to do I suppose.

more likely to do it in a good mood than bad, just a little game I play I suppose.

driving is not a pastime. its a necessary evil, and doesn't have a place on a cycling forum, especially on a sunday. please stop talking about it.(typed from bed)

I sat next to a bloke once who'd been on a flight where the pilot hit some part of the airport buildings web he was taxiing. 3 people standing up early had to be stretchered away with broken bones, concussion etc. I am firmly in the arse on seat until the light goes off camp.

RJ2DJ - agree with you. I was taught on several defensive driving courses that slowing to a walking pace well before a red light or junction was less likely to result in being rear-end shunted and prepared you better for any eventualities. I was also told to keep the brake pedal depressed in those situations to keep the brake lights illuminated to more effectively warn drivers approaching from the rear that you are stopped. However, creeping forward after stopping is different!

Motorists who creep at lights should have there keys taken off them, whats the point ?

In terms of passing a Driving Test, unfortunatley, the test is not all always about whats best practice, more over what is safe.

For example, on a gradiant at lights, if a driver held the car on the clutch at bite, a fault would not be recorded provided that the driver moved away cleanly without rolling back.

A rollback would be marked under move off control and depending on the amount it rolled, a minor fault or serious would be recorded.

Obviously this is not good for the clutch, sitting at bite for 2 mins or so but all the examiner can mark is what happened not what could even though they know themselves its not best practice.

What about people who get in their car drive off and THEN put their seat belt on?
