undecided where to go this summer, anyone recommend a cottage in either area and why that area over another?

Northumberland, much quieter and still loads to do but without the crowds

That's the place to stay.

Second for Drac's suggestion - it's a lovely cottage, very well equipped and totally bike friendly.

Oodles of local routes/guiding by Tim Carpenter who is the 'chef patron'

Thirded for Drac's suggestion. Rothbury is a lovely place and Tim is a top bloke and excellent guide.
