[#3457063]

I am trying to organise a night time race and I need some help with suggestions for how to mark out some of it. I'm hoping to have it pretty well marshalled but there are sections of open, boggy moorland where it would be impractical to marshall. I am considering garden canes with reflective tape (this kinda thing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Reflective-tape-Hazard-Red-White-chevron-50mm-x-10m-/360417869468?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53ea943e9c )attached to them every so often. I have discounted glow sticks as being too expensive and might not last long enough.
So, anybody got any other bright ideas? See what I did there? 😉

How about buying a few glow-worms and breeding them?

Thanks Drac, seen them BUT as I said above I have doubts over how long they will last plus the event is a charity one so the less I spend the better, y'see.

Too expensive?

30 quid per thousand?

how long is the race?

still glowing quite reasonably after about 6 hours and at that price you can put one every few metres. compared with tape at £12 for 10 metres, thats a bargain.

Oh didn't see you glow stick bit. 😳

It's part of the problem with events people don't realise all the little things soon add up.

Zulu, thanks for replying. If they can last 6 hours then some of these might do. Is that definite? I'd need them to last at least 2 1/2 hrs. I certainly wouldn't need 1000. It's a 5 mile course but only parts of it need marking.

Drac, yes - that's exactly it. £36 (including postage) would take a fair chunk out of it.

defo "bright" for two hpurs plus, a "clearly visible from a distance" glow for 3-6 hours, then faint glow after that

the ebay shop does smaller packs - 300 for about 15 quid delivered - also does the 6 inch thicker ones for about 20 quid for 100 which should be more "obvious" and easier to hang off canes if you wanted to

You would not need much tape - a couple of square inches is really bright in a headlamp beam. so a a little bit on a stick every 50 m would be enough to mark the way surely - I have a little bit left - email me if you want a few wee bits to experiment with. I gon some inch wide stuff on ebay

zulu - thanks again for that. I'll have a think about them again then. I'll take another trip round the course and weigh it up.

TJ - thanks for that. I'll take you up on that if I may. I'll drop you an email.

What about Left over or end of project cycle promotion giveaways. They often include reflectors or mini LEDS. Try your local cycle officer/cooncil person and see if they are having a clear out.

Another thought - most bike shop normally have a big box of scrap reflectors taken off of bikes = few nails and zip ties and job jobbed 🙂

Mr Sparkle

if you want some help with bits and pieces contact the Brownbacks team at info@brownbackracing.co.uk they have a lots of kit which might help you and I'm sure they'll lend it to you for nothing (hi-viz, radio's, ezup, etc) if you are organising a charity event 😀

personally I would "lume" and "reflective" mark each waymarker as lost riders may stretch the event organisation 😥
