Afternoon,

Out riding with my local gang yesterday who are all a bit fitter than me, so I spent most of the day playing catchup.

This morning I find that My lower back and stomach muscles are extremely sore when I try to get them to do anything, I am actually getting a few cramps in the stomach muscles from time to time.

There is no question that I have overdone it a bit, but how do I prevent this going forward?

Are there any exercises for the core that are specific to cycling? I sit an a desk during my working day, which I suspect might have contributed to the obvious weakness.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Warm up, stretch and ride.

After ride cool down and gentle stretch.

On rest days: super-man's, planks and crunches/reverse crunches.

Train on the bike 3-4 times a week.

Check your ride position too.

Try climbing. There isn't much better for your core strength and it's more fun that doing planks for hours on end.

I get this too from time to time. A little core stability goes a long way! As frankenstein I was doing planks with feet on the bed and then arms on a stability ball. As for lower back I use the stability ball, leg under the bed, ball under my stomach and do the superman.
