One man's cool is another man's cack, or something like that. What the hell is "cool" anyway?

I'm inclined to agree that older Astons are cool and new ones crass. Give me a 70s/80s DBS or V8 over the new ones any day, but that might be more to do with image/owners than desirability.

I've also got to an age where I have to accept that by the time I know about something it's already uncool to cool people. And I think titanium is a cool material for a bike.

Phil exactly!

all those things I said on any old car is just normal, but on *that* car it becomes cool, because people that own those cars just fetish-ize them, but by treating it like a normal car...well cool.

edit, I think people are cool rather than brands. Alexa Chung is cool.

railmonkey it would be cool if it had a week's worth of road dirt and a kiddie seat in the back, and empty crisp packets on the passenger seat.

But that car will never have any of those things, it will never be loved like a family pet, it won't have a name, and it won't have taken any families on holidays.

thank god for small mercies - a car with a name is wrong!

Alexa Chung is cool.

Disagee as it goes...

"I fell out of love with the Sixties
for a while. I think because I was so
identified with it. It's like Sienna
Miller when she did boho, then suddenly
stopped because she was like,
'****. What else can I do, because
I've done it?'"

One of my freind's Dad's had a DB2 as his only car;

[img] [/img]

and used to do the school run shopping/family holidays with it.

My freind hated it - he couldn't bear the attention.

Now he drives his son round in a 1928 Sunbeam;

[img] [/img]

oblivious to the fact his son feels the same as he did.

I think 'cool' is difficult to judge.

I do think that Buzz Ricksons jackets are 'cool' though 🙂

If I had an Aston I would call it Derek and I would take it to Bridlington on holiday.

I actually had a holiday in Bridlington with a guy called Derek from Aston, it wasn't quite what I was expecting. 😯

I bet it was cool though! 8)

Also, how can a search engine possibly be cool? It's not even, really, a product.

Someone clever - explain if you would.

'cool' is effortless, if you buy something, wear something or drive something in an effort to be 'cool' then, in my humble opinion, you've shot yourself in the foot.

There's lots of people who think they are 'cool' by 'not caring about being cool' though.

Oh and people should face the fact that Apple is cool - just because it's not niche enough for STW. Compare Apple's image to Microsoft or Dell's for instance.

Alexa Chung is definitely not cool BTW - looks like a cokehead, you can just tell. 🙂

Okay, but is Google Earth or Google Maps cool? Or is there some other über cool Google wheeze I don't know about?

EDIT: There's an E-Type Jag – ice latte brown – in the underground car park in this building. I don't care who drives it or for what reason. That MoFo is COOL!

stop picking on TJ 😉

there are indeed, but these people tend to make 'being uncool' an image for themselves with the intention of coming across as 'cool', thus shooting their own feet again

Lots of feet being shot here. Less Nike needed methinks.

EDIT: Phil, are you saying you have no brand lust whatsoever? There's not a single pimped up MTB (a Transition, perhaps) that shingles your nipples?

Those brands in that list are not cool, if they were they wouldn't be on that list, the moment a brand is in the Daily Mail it ceases to be cool, then if it goes and does this..

[img] [/img]

Like bikes, my bike is really cool, it's cool because nobody else has one like it, at least not where I ride. It's so cool I'm not even going to tell anyone what it's called, because you would all want one then it wouldn't be cool, it's cool because I ride it.

I'm cool. I'm ridiculously good looking, I make the bike cool simply by being on it, I ride wearing cool clothes from cool brands, I've got a really cool helmet it's the lightest helmet ever built, that's why it's cool, because it does something special. Kids stop and stare and go wow look at that cool dude on that cool bike, with the cool helmet, I ignore them, if I stopped to speak to them it wouldn't be cool.

Then I bust a really cool move, like jumping the kerb, they go like cooowooool.

The Daily Mail once wanted to take my picture - I won't let them.

Alvin Stardust tried to talk to me the other day, (he rides MTB's) I ignored him his bike wasn't cool.

If I met any of you, I'd probably ignore you as well unless you had a bike like mine, then I'd be polite, then go home and sell my bike immediately..

Nobody cool posts on an internet forum about cool things.

As a city _____ I can confirm that

Rolex
Bang & Olufsen
BlackBerry

Are high on my list of things I like to own (well I don’t personally, but there are more of these things around these parts than you can shake a stick at ) as well as Porsches (which is sad really, brilliant cars) and Boss suits.... So NO they are defo not cool in any way.

Aston Martin ... Sadly not. Used to be, but not anymore
Apple ... Nice looking products, cool
Harley-Davidson .... Really?? I dont think so
Google .... Nah... its a tool
Ferrari .... Put me, being a city knob, to one side.... Super Cool
Nike .... Better looking and more comfortable than Adidas and the rest, so Yes
YouTube ... Prefer Redtude myself

oh oh oh ... now those toyotas above, not the aston martin ones, just the normal ones are really COOL... have you seen inside them?.... its how I imagened the future would look like when I was seven.... COOL

Not sure STW, as a bunch of middle age IT engineers are really the people to talk of being cool, but anyway.

Apple are cool, they may not be niche but they are cool.
Aston are not, they may have been but they are not anymore.
Nike have there moments but I would think that Adidas are cooler as are Converse.

Blackberry's are not cool. Does anyone actually buy a blackberry for themselves and not just given them by their employer?

I'd replace ferrari with Alfa Romeo. Much cooler.

Don't think rolex or B&O are cool. It's the fat banker thing again.

Harley cool? Have you ever seen photos from one of their meets?

camo, no brand lust... bike lust though! its the only FS i've jumped on that just felt spot on compared to my super cool carerra with its anodised purple shiny bits 8)

i wont pretend that i dont recognise the effects of branding 🙂 but i generally dont care what brand a product is as long as its a good product.

You saying the looters had jobs? Blackberry is the weapon of choice for mass organised crime - a lot of yoot would say well cool.

I hear you, Phil!

I'm almost with you on this - but I confess (shamefully) to a few brand weaknesses.

Rip Curl, for some reason, shingles my nipples!

Can't explain exactly why, but my retro surf watch is cool with an added measure of über Fonz. 8)

* Sighs and wishes he was half as cool as derekrides *

The number of people that I have met that _hate_ their Blackberry devices with a passion means that they cannot be cool under any circumstances. Some level of "meh" might allow possible inclusion of them in the gadget league tables, but they are not _that_ good at what they do (iPhone better as a smartphone, laptop better at mail, etc). Personally, anything that is more "meh" than "wow" is out.

I like Aston Martin, but I would not say the whole brand is cool. Some models are cool, some not. I think that goes for just about everything on that list. Some bits good, some bad. New stuff on Google: Maybe cool for a while, then not.

You want cool, go look at niche stuff, something that has no brand, or has a brand that is unattainable to the common man. Hassleblad are cool, Porsche Spyders (James Dean, killer of) are cool. Rolex? not cool.

I don't think you can actually buy cool, you either are or you aren't.

People who try to are all a bit sad, really, aren't they?

Anyway, cool is way over rated, happiness is much, er, cooler.

Aston Martin - Look nice, but in a showy way. Not cool IMO. Too expensive and too heavy on fuel. For cool, fun car, look at the Abarth 500. Cheap(ish), economical(ish) and a huge, huge grin every time you drive it

Apple - Look nice, tactile, "affordable" and a "must use" utility - Cool, irrrespective of commonality

Harley-Davidson - Not cool, but I do like the V-twin sound. Fancied a Moto Morini Corsaro for V Twin noise and quirky looks - although of course, the exclusive price tag means unlikely to be cool.

BMW F800GS would do nicely - parallel twin, excellent utility, quirky looks, tuned to sound like the big flat twin GS

Rolex - flash and gash

Bang & Olufsen - oh, look at me, look at me...

BlackBerry - I don't "get" BalckBerry - prob due to big hands and small keys. Too businessy to be cool, unless your an inner city looter

Google - I get where Beeb are coming from, but to me this is pure utility.

Ferrari - beauty, but at a price that defines uncool exclusivity

Nike - cr@p. Utterly uncool. About as uncool as you can get IMO

YouTube - Neither cool or uncool in itself.

I'm generally "brand"-averse.

Not rabidly anti-apple etc but I think I'd be less likely to buy anything that was generally put in the same bracket as Aston Martin and Rolex

Vans are not cool anymore, they were but they are no longer.

they're cool if you actually skate in them.... they only become uncool when bought by some ****er from JJB or schuh.

as the original skate shoe they will always hold a special place in my heart.

Im 30...

Aston Martin, New Astons are uncool, thier image is becoming what Porsches image was in the 1980's. Maserati are cool. The Alfa Romeo 8c and 4c (concept) are cool.

Apple, uncool no matter how hard they try.

Harley-Davidson, Uncool, unless your names Bonesaw and you live in Arizona.

Rolex, uncool, but will become cool again.

Bang & Olufsen, mildly cool so long as you dont namecheck it.

BlackBerry, uncool.

Google, just a search engine.

Ferrari, Too much merchandise has devalued the coolness brand.

Nike, uncool unless your a teenager. Onitsuka Tigers are much cooler.

YouTube, indifferent.

Apple must be cool - because so many people want its products.

Personally, I think cool left the Apple building sometime around G4.

Style-wise, it's still fresher than Dell, but it's become so utilitarian, so defined by manufacturing cost savings, the range looks pretty bland to me nowadays.
