I'm having my house renovated and inherited a couple of traffic cones from the previous owner. I have no driveway but there is on-street, non-residents parking directly outside my house. Awaiting the arrival of the gas fitter this morning, I placed two cones directly outside my house so they could park nearby to unload. I kept an eye on the cones but - damn me - after making a coffee I saw that someone had moved them and parked up, ninja-like. The person in question works in the village (where there is a large public pay and display car park). They park outside my house every day and therefore know that cones are never left out. Common sense would therefore dictate that if cones *are* out then there must be a valid reason? I am under no illusions. I know that I have no *right* to a space outside my house. Nor does anyone have to respect the cones that I've placed. But due to renovations, I'll be placing cones out fairly regularly over the next two months. How does STW suggest that I deal with this? I'm thinking perhaps a polite notice of explanation taped to each cone, requesting that people appreciate my conundrum. I'd rather that than resort to direct confrontation and/or passive-aggressive notes on windscreens? Or I can just lie on the road each morning whilst I wait for the trade-of-the-day to turn up, but I may end up sunburnt.

If they persist in parking there after you've asked nicely, you can always follow up with a passive-aggressive "park here at your own risk, but please be warned that workmen in vans will be in the area and trying to squeeze past." (-:

I would cover the cones in axle grease, that will be the last time they try to pick them up

Sprinkle the pavement with patches of broken toughened grass and put a burning sofa on your front lawn.

Encourage your neighbours to do the same - think of it as 'Britain in Gloom' - everyone mucking in and playing their part. Maybe get some trainers dangling from the telegraph wires and so on.

Tourists clogging up the parking will soon be a distant memory. Soon all the village shops and cafes will be boarded up and the jobs a good-un.
