I was looking at a Panasonic DMC FS15 (or similar) but the DMC TZ8 caught my eye too.
I want a sturdy compact camera to take out on rides, walks etc that is going to give me quality results. I have a bridge camera which is great for some of the stuff i do but it is too big to carry about and too clumsy to get going for those spur of the moment shots without walking round looking like a photo journo in a war zone all the time.
Anyway, both of those seemed to fit the bill and budget (up to about £230). Does anyone have any experience of either or are there any other decent alternatives out there?
This looks a pretty good deal - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/panasonic-lumix-dmc-tz65-compact-digital-camera-02607390-pdt.html
Seen some awesome pics taken with Lumix compacts.
I agree about the deal, they just don't have any stock anywhere near me! 🙁
I have a TZ1, my o/h has a TZ6. They're really good camera - very robust and they take a pretty good photo.
The only 'problem' I have is they're not great in low light levels but I rarely need to take photos in that situation so it's no problem to me.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
Order the TZ65 online, I did so last week on that offer price and it arrived in 2 days. Lovely piece of kit and should be taking some photos of the bike in the woods later 🙂
I've got a TZ4, and I'd recommend it. I'm really bad at taking photos, but since I got the Lumix the quality has improved - colour & detail is very good.
Notter - it says not available for home delivery so I guess I have missed the boat. 🙁
I've got an FS15 and quite like it, i did no research when buying it but had john lewis' vouchers so was limited to that and the olympus equivalent. All i really wanted was the widest lens for the money which was actually the olympus but the menu structure instantly offended me so i went panasonic. Just took it on a cycle tour (i'd normally carry SLR and 2 lenses) and wasn't massively sad not to have the big camera.
all these were taken with it : http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrmichaelwright/sets/72157623832236860/
battery lasted a week of touring and was still at 1 bar of 3 level after nearly 300 shots
I hate looking at pictures of Scotland..... they remind me I'm living in Suffolk! Some nice shots in there. Now where's the map? I'm going to have to start planing my next trip. Never been to the NW, mainly SW and the Borders. Looks like that is going to change! 8)
thanks
Scotland doesn't technically start until about Perth as far as i'm concerned 🙂
In the last 12 months i have spent 4 weeks touring on my bike in scotland
that's 4 out of 52 weeks which is 8% of my year
i like that i have spent the equivalent of 1 out of every 12 hours in the last year in the NW of scotland
I got my eye on a Pentax Option W90

Waiting for a decent review and sample images.
But I know the W80 was a bit pants on the image front. As it's a camera I though image quality should be at the forefront. Also, I understand quality will be done a bit as it got to shoot through a window every time.
Could be a good trail camera.
I just bought the TZ7 for 199 at Amazon - early days but seems top notch. I also wanted it for video which you may or may not use? Currys do the TZ65 for the 149 as well.
I had to go to town to buy an external HDD today and persuaded myself that the TZ65 was a good deal. £149 but as it was a display model I talked them into another £30 off which was a bit of a result really. I so nearly went for a TZ7 or TZ8 but by the time I added an 8GB card, case etc it was beginning to get expensive.
let's see how it does!
I got a TZ7 about a month ago and am very pleased indeed with it. I'm currently walking about Manhattan taking some furtive shots and it works brilliantly, the results are sharp and the colour is very good. I'd strongly recommend them.
I posted about th tz65 just over a week ago when it was on offer at currys. Just back of hols and it's a great piece of kit! As point and shoot as you want it to be or you can take control of various things if you feel the need!
Might we worth checking back with currys to see if it's still on sale?
Check out the TS1 / FT1. Waterproof, shockproof, nice wide angle and proper HD video. Not a bad package. Mine is sitting in a drawer waiting for it's first real outing on Saturday.
ordering the new TZ8 next week (wife gets discount through work) looks great and has a manual mode for playing about with. can't wait to get it
"sturdy compact camera"
OK, does anyone really think a TZ qualifies as sturdy? I love mine (TZ7), it's a phenomenal bit of kit, but it feels like I could fold it in half. Guess I'm just never happy but I'll not be taking the TZ places I'd happily have taken the Ixus. Not a ruggedised camera that, just a regular compact but it was hard as nails.
In fact, if anyone wants a very slightly used TZ7, let me know... Not desperate to sell but I reckon I've bought the wrong camera.
I've got the panasonic ft1 and it's a really sturdy camera and image quality is excellent,
that a look here for a review of "sturdy" cameras
