Breaking Bad and Deadwood are both better, if you've not seen them.

Breaking Bad is great. You're constantly left hoping that someone in it will make a good decision though

Spooks and Downton Abbey. British TV is so much to be proud of.

Stop after S01. It really goes downhill after that.

Certainly an option...

Alternatively - BSG, Walking Dead, Game of Thrones.

Of the Above - Dexter, Spooks (first few series - gets silly after that, but the first are ace), Generation Kill are all very good.

I watched series 1-4 of the Wire back to back on Sky last year but they then didn't show series 5?

I'm too tight to buy it on DVD so does anybody know when (if) series 5 will be shown?

I'm also a fan of Breaking Bad and watched it from the start on FX. I have no idea why it isn't shown in the UK as it's excellent. Series 4 is about to come out on DVD (region 2) so i'll be getting hold of that soon.

Also a big fan of Dexter although i was disappointed with the last series. Hopefully the next one will be a return to form.

I finished The Wire, and there was simply... a void.

Best American TV since Twin Peaks.

Cheers for the suggestions, The Sopranos is a good call, I only caught bits and pieces of it when it was shown on Ch4. Generation Kill and Treme might be up on the agenda as well

Generation Kill is a good start as it's short (although I guess you have to have some liking of war stuff to get into it)
Breaking Bad is good although I've kinda got to the 'meh' point in Season 3
Sopranos well worth starting on, lots of episodes and a good overall storyline
Weeds is about the only other series I've gotten into and look forward to each new series, it's a bit like Breaking Bad but funny :p

More West Baltimore, but from the other side. A sort of prequel.

As an absolute Wire obsessive, I would recommend going back to the start and watching it all again. You'll be amazed at how many little things you didn't pick up on.

I'm currently re-watching the whole thing for the 14th time and I'm on season 4. No television show comes remotely close to filling the void.

There was something in the news about one of the characters recently. It's a bit of a spoiler so I won't put details here. Google will reveal.

!!!!!
I don't even tend to watch things twice unless there's a decade or so in between.

I've been re-watching all the episodes of Soprano's on Sky Atlantic, last episode tonight. If you've not seen them already I'd recommend it, I think it's better than The Wire IMO.

The Wire shits all over anything else I've seen bar 6 Feet Under and Bodies (UK hospital drama).

Tried BSG, Game of Thrones, Dexter adn oters. Tempted by Breaking Bad.

Can relate - still in a post Wire void

Sopranos - Truly brilliant. Not sure if better than the Wire but different and at least as good. Feels so wrong to 'like' Tony but you can't help it. Funny and yet disturbing in equal measure.

I'm going to have to get Breaking Bad, havent seen it.

+1 Bodies, an absolute masterpiece, by miles the best UK drama of the last 10yrs. Dark and twisted and very very naughty.

Deadwood is the only thing that's come close to The Wire for me.

Got bored of Breaking Bad.. seemed a bit contrived.. every episode seemed to end with a very coincidental set of circumstances which left the chemistry teacher with the exact ingredients/supplies to get out of whatever situation they were in.. got bored halfway through season 2.

Really? People rate the Wire that much? I got 3/4 of the way through the first episode of series one and switched it off. Incredibly dull. If you all promise it gets better I might give it a try again.

West Wing on the other hand...
