Bereft of Xmas present ideas thought I'd just ask for drinks for a decently stocked cocktail cabinet, so after the main spirits what are the most useful, versatile other ingredients?

Thanks for all you helpful replies :).

wrt spirits is it worth getting high end stuff (obvs will for G&T) or just stick to the mid-end big brand stuff?

urrgh- I feel sick thinking about the above list. I think it's the grenadine. Nothing good comes of drinking pink things...

People who are obsessed with them will use different gins (dependent upon the botanicals used) for different cocktails. Something like Hendricks, with it unique flavour, would be a disaster in some cocktails. You won't go wrong with a decent quality London gin in the first instance.

Buy cheap vodka and run it through a brita filter in order to get good quality vodka!
