[#7346486]

I need a few classic pub names for a quiz I'm writing. Can be tradtional, well known individual pubs, or from tv and literature. I've got a few but need some more so looking for some inspiration. Obscure ones are fun but less useful for this but feel free to chuck them in if it keeps the thread going.

That's perfect. Some good ones there. A few more fictional ones would be good, especially classic fiction as I have some from soaps.

The Cock Inn

We sometimes take club rides past it just so we can ask 'how far is the Cock Inn?'.

My favourite pub in Aberdeen used to be called "My Father's Moustache"

But is now more boringly called "The Noose And Monkey"

Much more traditional names around this way:

The Ship
The Boathouse
The Fox and Hounds
The Black Bull
The Swan
The Lion and Lamb

The Whippet Inn (known for its cider).

The Flying Swan (central to many Robert Rankin novels).

There's a couple in Reading with unusual names; The Litten Tree (known to us as The Kitten Tree) and The Purple Turtle (god knows).

Moe's Tavern? (Simpsons)

The Winchester (Shaun of the dead)

Also the pub in Minder, wasn't it?

Not classic names but some of my favourites are the ones which come from the super-local industries. On Scotswood road there were once The Crooked Billet, The Forge Hammer and The Blast Furnace ( amongst [url=

[/url]others). There must be loads of examples of that from around the country.

I read somewhere that the Elephant and Castle was a bastardisation of Les Enfants de Castille. There you are, a quiz question.

The Alma Inn is a widespread name with interesting roots.

There used to be two pubs in Ramsgate: the Blazing Donkey, and the North Pole. The latter had a bus stop outside so you could get a ticket to the North Pole.
