i like the way you can sometimes get called a racist if you don't like someone and they've got something to prove ( probably because they don't like you either to be fair, which is fair enough really - the not liking you part) Also in my observations whilst commuting such racism issues are not just a one way street, although they are usually presented in such a way ( not anything to do with me should I add)

And yes racism is wrong.

Anyone been listening to 5Live with Steven Nolan last night and tonight? No reasonable debate whatsoever. I've heard the clip a few times and it doesn't sound like he said the word, even so they chose not to broadcast it just in case. What's the problem?

Ability to identify those you dislike has always been a perennial problem for bigots, the nazis got round the problem with ingenious use of yellow stars and pink triangles. I guess there can't be much worse for a bigot than to have to accept someone on face value.

I genuinely never heard of the word "slope" as an ethnic slur before: I just had to look it up.

I now think we should petition the IOC to change the name of the Slopestyle event to "mucking about on the side of a hill".

I'd heard the word slope used as a racist slur before; I believe it's more commonly used in America but given the way it was used on Top Gear it was clearly supposed to have "naughty" undertones. If casual 1970s style racism is what passes for humour these days on top gear then they need to have a word with themselves.

Is it ok to say that someone's in a dark place when they are depressed? Cos that could also be offensive, equating dark with bad.

you may wish to consider that white means/represents peace and black means evil/baddie in our culture to understand the reason. I dont think it is inherently evil and I dontthink it is that racist but it is interesting.

I don't doubt he can. However, speaking from experience, his reactions are eerily familiar; playing the race card for someone else so they can get into a shouting match. Seen it happen too many times 1st hand.

For me it's a simple as.....don't say or use the n word. Trying to intellectualize or diminish its use is quite frankly naive at best given historical events.

Whitewash and white flags spring to mind. However it's fairly obvious to me that we use dark or black for negative things because the dark is slightly scary, because we can't see potential predators who can still see us. Darkness is associated with fear and negativity. That has naff all to do with race obviously. But blackness doesn't have to be negative. Black tie looks good, as does a little black dress, and I just built a black bike that looks awesome. So it's perfectly possible to not link the two. Can't help thinking this is indeed people looking for a link where none exists.

What about a phrase like 'I've got a mouth like Ghandi's flip flop / an Arab's sandal' when parched, for example? I see that as simply a reference to a dry, dusty place, but not attaching any negativity to it. I doubt I'd ever use such a phrase these days - someone somewhere would be bound to take offence - but I struggle to see how they could logically do so.

"White" is most definitely used as an insult in Leicester. Working as a white teacher in 100% non-white classrooms in a Leicester school it didn't take long to work out what the racist insults directed at me were. The ones delivered in English were simply "white + insulting word/expression".

The difference between "white" used in an insulting way and words to describe other groups in an insulting way is that courts are reluctant to class racist attacks on whites as racist:
