Yeah I wasn’t looking to retire on a £1500 second hand car don’t worry. Just considering whether it would be worth spending a few quid sorting it out. It has 70k now so if I kept it 10 years I’d probably be selling it with ~85k so worth considering

Just seen a 316ti for 600 quid down the road with ABS light on. Can’t be that quick though

I wouldn’t touch any of those with a barge pole.

ABS light could be something as simple as a corroded connecter or a duff wheel sensor. It could also be the abs pump which would run your budget.

Any EP3 civics at that price? Would guess the good ones are asking more. Might get a scruffy but mechanically sound one.

EP3s seem to start at £3k, there’s the odd cheap one but nothing currently close to me

900 quid 325ci looking attractive but I’m wary of a secondhand convertible

EP3's at 3k would be rot-boxes and shagged. Decent ones fetch way more than that now.

This could be a bargain...

Very useful, cheers! Would you recommend a Volvo XC90 as a fast cheap unsensible car?

That MG is nice but also 7hrs away

No real point getting any BMW without at least a 323/325 as they just aren't fast enough to be fun and will still cost about the same.

Hard to see past the Clio 172 type rollerskate older hot hatch.

V8 anything would be nice for a while but the road tax might be scary, unless you get one old enough to be exempt (if that's still a thing)

Or, depending how old you are and what memories you have, get the car you always remember from your childhood when your parents used to drive you around everywhere. This would be good for me as they had an 84' SAAB 900 Turbo, although finding a reasonable one nowadays might be tough without paying far too much.

From memory corroded brake pipes did for my old beemer compact a couple of years back, I think you need to drain and drop the fuel tank to do the front to rear line? Handling wasn't as good as the 3 series estate I had before it either, think the compact may have inherited the previous gen rear axle?

Sub £1500?

206 GTi 180. No, not the 206 GTi. The 206 GTi 180.

0-60 7.4 secs.
174 bhp.
Variable valve timing.
Revs to 7300rpm.
35mpg
Breathed on by lotus.
Far better than the GTi.
Lift off oversteer.

Much maligned because people lump it and the normal GTi into the same basket.

And it's not a 205. No it isn't. It's much safer which is no bad thing.

Completely different car bar the shell and dash.

Cheap because it's not a Clio 182 or EP3 civic. Better than a focus st170. Great fun. Being undesirable is the buyers gain.

I've had one recently as a toy that I took round the track. Great fun. Only sold it to fund a bigger toy.

Easily get a very clean tidy car for 1500.

Corroded brake lines can just be covered with rust converter then undercoat if they're only an advisory, no need to replace them at this point.

I drove some compacts at ice drive Sweden, which is probably unfairly complimentary to a car as its so much fun anyway, but I'd have no concerns buying one. Not a very silly choice though, fairly slow, moderately plush, normal old car

Having had a Mark one and Mark two BMW Mini CooperS I’d avoid an old high mileage one. The problem is you just want to rag them constantly. Engine lights? Run away.

Fun and stupid you say? £1500 to blow?

One of these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A8-2-8-Quattro-/124553542540?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

And one of these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Quality-S-Line-Audi-Sports-Metal-S-Boot-Badge-A3-A4-S3-A6-A8-S-S4-S8-RS3-RS4-/273374529604?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

Then you can pretend you are chasing a mysterious silver box across the south of France.

Do not under any circumstances but buy a golf cabriolet. They are the cars the phrase "pig in lipstick" was made for. Although in the case of the MK4 the lipstick had smudged a fair bit.

225 Audi TT coupe is the logical answer... Maybe not quite "stupid" enough, but I saw an MOT failure the other day up for £1200, all it needed was 2 new tyres, some brake pads and new brake hoses on the front, otherwise it was VGC and well cared for. You can get reasonable condition higher milers for under £1k now...

The advantage with a 225 TT is that if anything happens to it, they're worth more scrapped than they are running! That one above was bought by a breaker sadly, he'll double his money at least on that!
