[#13535830]

Anagallis junior is off to Cambodia in July on a world challenge trip the lucky bugger. He will be taking his digital SLR thingy as he is into photography however he will be in some cities etc and won't want to use that ( he has already had one theft attempt in London). Problem is he is not allowed to take a phone. Seems digital cameras can be had pretty cheap anyone recommend anything under say £70. Any tips much appreciated.

The best compact digital camera I had was a Minolta DiMage x50. Puny by today’s standards but often cheap on eBay.

as a young person a more modern Panasonic or canon compact zoom might be a better choice for a few £100s. #2 child caught an amazing cheetah on a termite tower pic on safari in Tanzania with a ‘cheap’ Panasonic compact that surpassed my canon APC SLR with big zoom and polariser. Timing!

Having used a few in classes for students to document coursework, I'd avoid any of if the cheapy no-name brands off Amazon. My previous HoD ordered a few, and it was a false economy, as they all broke really quickly.

Current school, the kids had previously been using phones for photos, but there'd been a lot of issues with 'other' phone use, so when I started I ordered 4 Kodak FZ55s. They've done well this year. Decent enough quality and quite robust. Low light photos are so so, but a lot better than the cheapie ones.

Otherwise look second hand at compact cameras from Canon, Sony, etc. lots to be found on eBay.

The alternative approach is: just enjoy the experience and don’t bother with pictures. My in laws have adopted this approach on recent holidays and say it has increased their enjoyment a lot.

We probably have the perfect camera in a draw. But it’s promised to my daughter. I’d start a thread seeing if you can get a specific offer before the admins lock the thread

This is where film still shines.

Take a photo with no idea of its success so just get on with enjoying the moment.

I think any kid going on a dream trip is going to want some photos going forward to remember it.

Thanks for the advice so far, looking through eBay is a good shout.

If he's "into photography" and already has a dSLR I'd be wanting to get something from the same brand.  Whilst obviously more complex, the basic control layout of my Canon is near-identical to the old pocket IXUS I carried in my coat pocket for years.  Familiarity is your friend when you're trying to capture something quickly.

I'm kinda surprised that someone who is "into photography" doesn't already have a clear idea of exactly what they want, mind.

I don't think there is anything in the £70 budget, but it might be worth having a look on mbp.com under their 'premium compact camera' section. You are probably looking at nearer £200 for something decent though - compact cameras seem to be popular again.

I was going to suggest something like a used Nikon P300 mainly because I own one & it's a decent little travel camera. But, they seem to be at least £150 on ebay & are not worth that sort of money, in my opinion.

It's probably worth just trawling ebay and searching for certain ranges of cameras - like the Panasonic TZ range of compacts. If you search for "panasonic TZ" on ebay there are load of options at decent prices.
Same if you search for "Nikon P"
I am struggling to think of other search terms for brands like Canon & Sony. ("Canon Ixus"??)

Before buying see if you can get spare batteries from somewhere like Hahnel. My P300 batter life is dire now, as it's getting on a bit so a back-up battery would always be a good idea.

I have an Olympus TG3 or 4 (can't remember) that I never use. They seem to be going for upwards of £140 on eBay. I'd be happy to let you have it for your budget. Not sure where the charging cable is, but they are £6/7 on Amazon. It's in decent condition and has a hard case/pouch.

It has a very limited zoom but shoots raw and has an f2 lens I think

I don't know if it's quite what you want but my friends went to India recently and bought one of the Camp Snap cameras with the view that it would just be a bit of fun but they wouldn't be precious about it. They're about £60 and they have some great holiday photos (plus no screen means you get to look through them for the first time when you get back like the olden days!) and overall were really happy with it.

It is just a fixed lens, but could be great just for some behind the scenes type snaps.
