I saw this earlier today. I don't get how this relevant to the book? It's almost like they have got the wrong picture on the cover.

Members of the public reacted angrily

Rather than just raising an eyebrow? Freaks, those members of the public.

This is no place for facts or quotes Jamie. He was an odd duck but as you say, seems to have nothing to do with the story.

Don't judge a book by it's cover.

I've still got the top middle one with the penguin on it from when I bought it at school in about 1974

Maybe the new cover is a reflection on the name Willie Wonka ?

Love it, more thought provoking that most, taps into the whole selfie/instagram obsession too, with a twist of 50's glamour.

Problem is, if I was a little dude again then I would in no way pick up this book to read.

It seems some mid-30s marketing bod has designed a cover for his own demographic. Which seems to miss the point somewhat.

Fortunately:

A spokeswoman for Penguin stressed that the new edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was "intended for an adult audience"

I did read that, but where are they going to put the book in stores? I imagine they'll end up in the children's section.

They could have quite easily gone in a more adult/sophisticated direction, but with a design that also still appealed to 'da yout.'

My inner little dude is outraged. 8)

Most bookshops* have a section for the whole series of Penguin Modern Classics don't they?

*basing this on the three that I go into with any regularity.

This. Don't get the reaction tbh. Is it one of those traps where anyone not holding their pitchfork aloft is outed as an uber-peado?

Damn right, because;

a) it's got an orrible girl on the cover.
b) it's got an orrible girl on the cover IN PINK.
c) it's a book ffs. There are bikes to ride and roofs to climb.

how on earth could you argue that c&tcf is an adult story? It's a story about a poor boy (a child) who has a great adventure and ends up owning a sweety factory, every childs dream. (well children of times gone by perghaps, these days is all fame and cash)

With a picture of a young girl all done up I assume there target audience is people like Jimmy Saville.

Dead Yorkshiremen?

It's a pretentious picture of a child in adult clothes.
I fail to see what the issue is.

....Jimmy Saville

That didn't take long did it.

(Extra points for spelling it wrong too)

Need to keep up to date with those nonce references, the bbc story linked in the op already mentioned Rolf.
