Just received a new spare battery for my HTC Legend. Any tips for charging it for the first time to ensure max battery life?
Its a Li-ion 1300 mAh, ie.e standard battery, if that makes any difference.

Run an extension lead into your deep-freeze and do it there.
Or should it be on top of a radiator...?

fit it in your phone. connect phone to charger. wait for the light to change colour.
