@McMoonter - I was in the Bavarian Alps and the Tirol on holiday last month and many houses just use large steel mesh cylinders for storing wood in an untidy fashion. The holz hausen method is clearly for people with a more artistic approach.

What was also very popular was the usage of gabions as an architectural feature either as part of a structure, a fence/boundary or as a garden display. We saw some really nice ones.

Maybe your next challenge should be a gabion feature or sculpture to embellish your garden?

I've seen gabions being used in gardens as a decorative feature such as two baskets supporting a wooden top to form a bench. I quite like them.
