[Closed] Caramel smell on the trails - plant or tree?

To continue the smells theme.

Around the wooded areas near me, I often come across sections which smell of caramel or candyfloss. I know that a plant is responsible for it, but the only one I can find appears to be a Japanese native (Cercidiphyllum), with limited distribution in this country.

Can anyone tell me what it is?

Ta

Geoff

The katsura tree does smell of candy floss - really strange but lovely to smell. I don't know of anything else. Do you have a toffee factory or confectioners nearby?

OBVIOUSLY, there's a paedo hiding in the undergrowth, wafting eau de werthers to attract kids

Mmmm I suppose it could be the Katsura Tree. Not sure how it could be as widespread as it appears to be though.

More investigation required I think.

Gorse can smell of coconut when it flowers.

Some people think gorse has a sweet vanilla smell, smells more like coconut to me (apparently there is a genetic component to how you perceive the smell)

Very unlikely to be Cercidiphyllum as that only really smells when the leaves are fallen (autumn sun on a damp, still morning is the perfect for the one in my back garden), so if you're smelling it now it'll be something else.

Gorse totally smells like coconut doesn't it! I was amazed. Only just noticed as this is my first proper year on the bike out in the hills breathing hard and I smoked until 2 years ago today (yay me).

Also noticed a wonderful smell of foxgloves when riding up a lane lined in thousands of them.
