I moved house at about xmas. Loads of jobs to do, but one is to re-paint the front door. I hate gloss paint with a brush, so is there a good reason why I can't get a can of car spray paint and (with door removed) give it a few coats? My thinking is that it would go on thinner than with a brush, would be stable in sunshine/damp and would give a pretty good shiny finish. Any good reasons why not????

it may react with the existing paint (sort of softens the existing & then all puckers up)

Car paint cracks quite easily IME. You can get plastic primer that you are supposed to use on plastic parts that ate likely to flex. The plastic primer is supposed to stop the top coat cracking on slightly flexible surfaces. A door is likely to flex when slammed

Bear in mind that there is a lot less paint in a rattle can than you think, and it goes on in such thin coats that you will need a fair few coats to get a thick layer of paint. You'll probably want at least two coats of plastic primer (at about £10+ per can then three or four coats of top coat at about £12+ per can. I recon you'll need at least one can more likely two cans to do one coat of each side of the door. You'll also need fine grade wet and dry paper between coats.

I recon it will be expensive to do well even if it works. Also car paint runs very easily when using rattle cans. You can only apply s very thin coat at a time

You'd get a lovely shiny lustre on your door tho if you wet'n'dry between coats and finish with T cut 🙂

Go to the Dulux Decorator Centre nearest you. Get Trade undercoat and Trade gloss and some Purdey paintbrushes.

You'll get a lovely finish without needing to be a craftsman.

Need to use the correct primer for the paint to stick.
