Can you sell it in it's current condition?

If so, how much for?

Is that more than £1000 less than after you have the work done?

how much of that is labour and realistically which end of the worth range is it really worth? if it has an mot already id be inclined to ebay it and mention the problems

you sure an 02 astra is worth that much in the current climate? not being rude but my 02 MPV shocked me being worth just £2200 2nd hand and MPV's tend to hold a bit of value, after your £1000 it would only get you £1300 left in pocketable value.. tbh when cars cost that much to fix I say time to change!

Possibly but it has a dent on door pannel and has been keyed, so its not exactly an attractive vehicle to buyers probably be best selling it to trade.

its an 1.8 sri with the factory boadykit and A/C with 65,000 on the clock looking at autotrader i reckon its about £2800. Its a good car and has just had £400 of new tires on it and 8 months tax and MOT left.

Halfrauds or one of many other places will sort the paintwork probs out, especially if the key damage isnn't that bad plus that won't cost you much. Again the dent can get sorted then I would get a decent valet done on it and sell as it sounds like your hanking after a new car.

If you buy a new car, you'll be saddled with high servicing costs (you'll want to maintain the dealer warranty?)so you need to set the costs of that against your current repair bill. New cars sometimes go wrong too!

Also consider what the £1k repair bill gets you. If it's going to keep the car going for another 3 years or more, it's worth it. If it's just patching it up until the next MOT, it's probably time to move it on.

£1000 is quite a bill, got a breakdown on what exactly needs doing?

Can you cut the bill by sourcing cheaper parts?

I am a sucker for keeping old bangers/cars going, but I think I would have 2nd thoughts splashing out that sort of dosh on that sort of car tbh.

we recently sold our 02 Passat estate <60K miles, FSH, v nice condition, no problems with it, T&T and got lots less than we imagined ... we ended up ebaying it as no interest elswhere and got c.£1-1.5K less than matching cars advertised on Autotrader. But the 2ndhand car we replaced it with was sig cheaper (and we got 30% knocked off by haggling) than we imagined too ... so reckon it's a buyer's mkt

Well it needs

Rear springs/coils
Discs and pads all round
Rear calipers
A/c regassing
Dent in door pannel and scratch on rear quarter fixing

The quote was from a vauxhall dealer (pentagon) using genuine parts after I took it in for its service. Phoned the local garage for a quote and waiting for them to get back to me. Its not even old enough to get the £2000 cashback , balls

Shop around for AC regassing, easily done cheaper than dealer prices.
Discs & pads easy to do yourself, calipers fairly straight forward too.
Chipsaway for dent / scratches.

Find a decent independent garage - you'll halve the labour bill.

if you want a new car, get one.

don't bother getting the work done, trade it in with a list of things that need sorting. garage will sort them cheaper than you ever could.

if it's the money, *far* cheaper to get it sorted and keep the old one. use pattern parts, do the discs and pads your self, forget about getting the dent and scratch sorted - it'll only get dinged in tecso's carpark again anyway.

stonemonkey most of that you could do yourself, do you have any mates handy with spanners that could help you out?

A/c regassing can wait until next year 😉

If that's a quote from a Vx dealer then definitely get a second opinion.
Can't you do most of the work yourself, changing disc aren't that hard..

Rear springs/coils £100
Discs and pads all round £100
Rear calipers £recon or repair
A/c regassing £ vaires from £20-40.

Just the labour.

Hayes manual and some tools.

I think you could sell it and tell the buyer what needs doing and it'll soon.

Shop around for parts/labour if you have time.

Not everyone wants to DIY anymore.

Sockpuppet how do you know it got dinged in tesco's car park was it you? 😀

How difficult is discs and pads compared to bikes? to be honest if the coils need doing they might as well do the discs while its on the ramp, never used the A/c anyway and the scratch can stay. Damm and I wanted some justification to buy a new car and was in shock.

stonemonkey shop around. I was quoted £980 for a new driveshaft and fitting/VAT by a Scooby garage. I had the work done for £165 using a part from a breakers and a indie Scooby specialist.

If you ring round alot of places (NOT) main dealers and ask for their best quote nicely you'll be shocked. The dent? How bad is it? Speak to your local chipsaway franchisee- he/she will come out and they'll know someone who they can share the work with (pull the dent out). Also- your not keeping the car just getting it into servicable shape. Then stick it in autotrader and see what you can sell it for- you might not even need the discs to be honest.

I put some nasty gouges into a Honda FRV- chipsaway lad filled them in and sprayed for c£100 inc VAT. I wasnt keeping the car so wasnt bothered if the lacquer lifted later on etc.

Ring round a fair few- you'll be amazed.

Stonemonkey I've been using Capel motors 2854449 for years, just off peniston road give them a call for a price and tell them I (steve hardcastle) sent you. You'll get a good price off them. A couple of other people from here have used them as well after my reccomendations, one saved about £300 on £1k of work form another independents quotes.

Ac is about 40 at kwikfit with a guarantee that if it doesn't work you don't pay and leave the dent scratch alone. Job done.

The stealer will always rip you off mate 🙂 Discs and pads are really easy to do diy on a car. The calipers are quite easy too, I am no mechanical genius but when I had my MR2 I had to do my own work or keep forking out. It was an ace way to learn about cars 🙂 I had never replaced calipers before but I did them all on my MR2 saving me £££££s Don't be afraid of diy if I can do it anyone can 😆

Tsk tsk, shopping around helps put the local [s]Bi[/s]main dealer out of business. Please think of their margins. Next time you want [s]sales[/s] advice, a coffee and that service stamp in your book think of your local RRP [s]bikeshop[/s] dealers instead of price-competitive non-franchise/free market options... 🙄 8)

Most the jobs can be done at Kwik Fit for a far less cost, main dealers are the least cost effective option usually.
Most of the work is due to general wear & tear, I would not pay a grand..
shop around, dont be a mug.. 🙄

Why new rear calipers ? should it be .. new seals in the rear calipers ?

If the A/C needs regassing it has a leak. Don't get it regassed it will just come out again either get the leak sorted or leave it. As for brake discs and pads about £30 for the set and 1 hour max to fit. Calipers Probably just need a good clean and working in and out a bit seal kit at worst 1 1/2-2 hours. Springs are just a nuts and bolt job easy diy not sure how much but I guess £50 the pair tops. Valuation I think is a bit steep £1200 max sorry if the last bit offends.

not sure about the seals, but probably.

Sturmey
Valuation wise parkers says 1600 - 2600 so say £2000 but what people are actually willing to pay is a different matter

Clean it up and stick it on Autotrader. If the buyer doesnt ask the question then you dont have to tell them (it works for some sellers on STW).

The quote was from a vauxhall dealer (pentagon)

well there you go. Main Dealer quotes on a 7 year old car? no way. Find yourself a decent independent.

And as for Parkers... try What Car - they have an online site with used car valuations. Not as accurate as Glass's Guide, but unless you're in the trade you can't see that anyway.

I just traded in a 2004 BMW 320d SE estate with 106k miles on the clock. Got identical trade in values from 2 different garages (both non-BMW main dealers) of £4250, compared with What Car's estimate of £4700 - close enough for me.

Most the jobs can be done at Kwik Fit for a far less cost

Apart from that I'm not entirely happy even driving past a Kwik Fit, having been less wise once, and also hearing the tales of other people who've used them. If they were the only alternative to main dealer I'd go to the main dealer!

To the OP, as others have said, get the work done at a decent independent (doesn't even need to be a Vauxhall specialist for that lot), and keep the car - with that lot done, there's a good chance you won't get too big a bill for a while.

In terms of sale value - according to the news this morning - Second hand car dealers can't get hold of enough cars to sell - my GF just bought a car from a dealer that only had 5 cars on the forecourt. You might find the right dealer will be more interested, and pay more, than you'd imagine.

Its not a shortage thats reflected in private car sale values(yet)

my parents were gonna sell thier clio (valued at 1700) but it broke just before they did...they had already got a new car...so they spent a grand on repairing it and gave it to me...its payed of...27k later and its going strong...drives me down to uni (6 hours away) no problem...its been a pretty good choice...so id say fix it if u like the car...or sell it if u dont like the car...

supposed to be going straight to auction. Saab main dealer won't retail a 5 year old beemer with that kind of mileage; but I'll have a look anyway. And you can't "slim down" the mileage as easily these days - DVLA will be all over them if they try it

PePPeR yeah meant to be two broken coils , am waitng for the quote from the local garage i normall use but this could be an excuse to get a new car.

That thing on the bbc about lack of second hand cars means that i might be able to get a reasonable trade in value, but who knows hey.

The trade in salesman will tell you anything to give you lower than book. I doubt any garage will give you book for your car but will always charge book for selling you a car. Funny that.

When you quote the BBC story they'll say 'yeah thats for cheap cars for poorer people where the car market for them is disapearing due to scrappage'. Bet tomorrow throughout the land the Sales Managers will be discussing how to counter customers over that quote.
