[#5023349]

just got a letter from VW about an extended warranty for my Polo.

Trying to figure out if it is worth while.

I know that insurance works on the basis of the insurer making more than they pay out, ie the whole point is to reassure the customer and that it is actually unlikely that you'll ever need it.

But

Is there any point, is it likely to cover the things that might go wrong? clutches, brakes etc are consumables but gear boxes, engines etc aren't

I'd have thought the best way of finding out what the warranty covers would be to check what the warranty covers?

My experience of vehicle warranties isn't great TBH, but then that was with used cars rather than new.

The website isn't the best and the phone lines close at 6pm, but more interested if anyone had ever had a policy and tried to claim, i have heard the aftermarket policies aren't really worth much at all, but Manufacturer??

We've had one quite bizzare experience with an extended warranty (which we bought) dealer twice tried to rectify a "fault" by changing cat converter, fault kept coming back. On renewal insurer jacked up the price massively so we didnt renew. Did some google research, changed the car battery and "fault" never reoccurred

With a high quality brand like VW I'd be tempted to say don't bother with the extended warranty, the car shouldn't give you any trouble, that being said if the warranty is cheap, coverage is good and you get additional benefits (like free roadside assistance) then it might be worth it.

@mrmo - is it a new shape Polo and if so what do you think of it ?

yes new shaped 10 plate, with 31k miles on it. My idea of a car is is it a nice place to be in a traffic jam. To which the answer is i think so, seats seem comfy, ipod connector as standard. Fuel consumption seems ok, i have had it not quite two years, ex dealer demo i believe.

So far i have had to change one tyre, which is fine by me.

I bought it because i liked the colour, what i will say i would recommend not buying the 60bhp 1.2, which i what i have. whilst it gets there, it does struggle a bit on some hills, North Devon Link road, and you do have to rev the crap out of it at times when overtaking or accelerating.

What year polo / what engine is it ? Polos suffer with valve seating/burning out problems which "should " be covered and would be expensive if not . Hard to believe I know but fact , their engines aren't as good as they used to be .

Recent experience of colleague: 5 yr old Audi A3, ABS packs up (common fault), that'll be £900 please sir for a replacement. I have extended warranty, remember I paid £400+ last year and £300+ this year, quite correct, its covered, just the excess of £250 to pay. Car fixed and taken home, paperwork checked, ABS REPAIRED, total cost £300.

He was far from impressed.

I wish we'd gone for the extened warranty on our Touran. Cost us £2200 in repairs in the six months after it came out of warranty, VW UK weren't interested in helping at all. We got shot before the ABS went (common fault and expensive at £1500), got another Touran but got a very good deal through our local dealership who unlike VW UK have been excellent. Will definitely be extending the warranty before it expires. Was going to do it from new but the dealership actually recommended against it on the off chance the car gets totalled in the meantime, their advice was take it out just before the standard warranty expires.

DO NOT RELY ON VOLKSWAGEN CARS TO BE RELIABLE BECAUSE OF THE BRAND, THEY'RE NOT.

Ahhahahahahaha etc.

Another Touran owner here unhappy with the crapness of VW design and build quality.
Would not buy VW again, having owned Polo (old square one), Seat Cordoba, Polo (newish shape), Passat Estate and now the Touran which has been a real let down.
