My insurance is due to expire in January and the AA have increased my policy by £250 even though I haven't made any claims and I'm also another year closer to 50. Any pointers for good cheap car insurance.

Elephant/Admiral is always the cheapest for me for some reason.

do a comparison site check

then phone up and negotiate

I got £30 off at directline (who I am already with and don't do comparison sites) which is >10% discount for haggling

got a decent quote from LV

no idea what they are like in event of accident, and to be honest i never want to know.

I switch every year as I found I got better deals. I was with Admiral but now with LV as they were loads cheaper than Admiral. As said above, use a Price Comparison site and you'll be amazed at the differences. Then when you get the quote, call them and try to haggle.

eSure where about £200 cheaper for me last year. All the others were pretty much in line with each other give/take (LV, direct line, more than, Tesco etc etc)

No straightforward answer to this - just try as many as you can. Comparison sites, direct and local broker.

But really watch for the excesses on some of the 'cheap' policies - some are well over £500.

Swiftcover have been good for the last 3 years.

I would avoid elephant and admiral (same company different websites), had loads of bother with them in the past. Lying robbing bstads.

confused.com works well for me.

comparison sites - confused, gocompare, moneysupermarket, comparethemarket, also cashback sites like quidco, topcashback, etc also offer additional offers if you sign up. It costs insurance sites about £40 a pop for each customer they get through comparison websites though so also try the cheapest results from compare sites directly.

Mini Insurance here (4 different cars I think over the last 4-5 years). You don't need a Mini so give 'em a try. English speaking people in Englandville too.

My Dad's renewal quote with Direct Line was £205, including NCD protection and courtesy car. Cheapest quote I've seen for ages so I reckon they're definitely worth a try.

AXA were half the price of the RAC when I did a little price comparison. Saved about 300 quid!

AXA had been good for me for the last couple of years but this time round Hastings Direct knocked another £100 off. A little over £250 a year now for a Citroen C4 1.6 petrol, 46yo driver, 20 years licence with full NCD
