So I paid for protected no claims discount, I make a claim then my premium rises substantially. I know why (although it's clearly not fair) but does my no claims discount still apply for other insurers? Do I apply saying I have made a claim but still have ncd? As ever insurance is as clear as mud
You can transfer your NCD to another insurer. You're (usually) only allowed to apply it to one policy at once though.
You have to declare any claims to your new insurer. How many years NCD do you have?
Yes your NCD is transferable, the amount to transfer will be stated on your renewal docs. If they have removed the proof, or dropped the years, complain and they reinstate it. If you have protected, it should be the last years amount +1.
You will need to confirm the claim to the new insurer also.
Think of NCD as a loyalty reward scheme rather than what it was meant to be.
Your premium would have risen more had you lost some if your ncd. Remember it is protecting your ncd not your premium.
If it is protected at say 5 years, yes you can put you have 5 years ncd when looking for quotes but yes you have to declare the claim.
They almost certainly will search the claims database and this is generally up to date.
It is up to the new insurer whether to offer to protect your ncd this time round (most will for just one claim). As you have had a claim it will not be n+1 it will simply be n.
Not sure what the previous poster means by its a loyalty card type thing now. It works add it always has done-an increasingly large discount the more years you do not claim for.
5+ years is worth something like 70% so a substantial amount (exact % varies insurer to insurer).
