I've got the following choices for the Passat:
Vetech (I thought they made those kiddie computer things)
Jurid
Brembo
Pagid
Eicher
Bosch
Which of these are reputable makes?
The first two of not heard of.
I believe Pagid make the discs for most VAG cars so they should do the job.
I wouldn't spend the extra on Brembo discs.
All the rest will be fine too
If you are looking for improved braking rather than just replacement parts worry about the pads rather than the discs
Brembo are *huge* I'd trust them. Lots of supercar/bikes use them.
Aye but its a pissat......
Pagid will do it fine.
I'd rather have reduced corrosion than anything else. I hate having to replace half worn stuff cos it's rusted to bits. I see lots of posh cars without much corrosion on their discs.. perhaps these are Bosch? Their website seems to suggest they have some kind of anti-corrosion coating on the non-braking surfaces..
Just make sure that you fully degrease the disks if you are replacing them. I haven't made that mistake by the way, but was glad that someone told me to before I did my first set 🙂
Only the cheapest of the cheap disks ive eve bought for my offroader came with grease that neede degreasing.
My pagids looked to have a zinc coating on.
Cars without much corrosion are the ones that are used.on here it Sounds like your passag spends most of its time on the drive rusting.

You mean you need to degrease the new disks before installing? 😮
What is the purpose of doing so? I need to know as I recently changed two front disks.
I'm talking about the middle of the disk and the edges. Corrosion creeping in from the edges can be an issue. The car can spend several weeks or more sat on the driveway as I cycle or take public transport, so if reduced corrosion is an option I'd take it.

Eh? Is that a joke? Never had to degrease any of the discs I have replaced.
Surface rust on the braking surface shouldn't be an issue on anything but the cheapest of the cheap discs.
I'm guessing the fronts are vented? not a lot you can do about corrosion in the middle of the two disc faces. The road salt gets in and eats away at the steel.
You could try somewhere like Mtech Brakes that anodises the discs
I paid £85 for a set of dimple and grooved discs for my Leon - Discs for the Passat are probably similar price / size. They will anodize a pair of them for £14
Have you thought about painting your discs? No, I am serious!
I know some people have painted the edges and heard of others painting the hub part too, I would do the edges but not the hub part.

This is the first picture that google found, only to show the white painted edge (thickness).
Are you talking about replacing the calipers & discs or just the discs?
I've never known a disc needing to be replaced because it was rusty! Badly worn or pitted yes, but if theres only rust on the non contact surfaces then its nothing other than aesthetics. If theres corrosion and rust on the braking surfaces thats usually an indication of poor caliper function or lack of use.
I have replaced discs on my van and car recently with Mintex discs/pads both sets needed degreasing.
Replaced the fronts on a A-class that I previously owned with some from Eurocarparts again these needed degreasing.
They normally have a very fine coats of oil/grease on them to prevent corrosion whilst in storage.
Even if they dont its good practice to degrease them after working on your brakes to prevent any accidental contamination from your hands with coppergrease and so forth.

Well, what happens is that the pad doesn't *quite* swipe the edge of the disk, so a very thin ridge of rust develops. This then starts to wear a shamfer on the pad which then means the edge isn't pressing as hard on the disk, so it doesn't clean the rust off as well, and it progresses. About a 15mm strip of visible dark blue corrosion on the edge of the disks, which flaked off when I tapped it revealing some bad corrosion underneath.
The vents are pretty choked up with rust too so I'm not sure how well they would work.
Well here is what the MTEC discs looked like
The issue I had was rough spots on the inside of the discs. I bought the car s/h and it was very low mileage for it age so it had probably been sat not moving for a while and the discs had some uneven spots as a result. The discs vibrated under moderate braking.
New discs and pads was an easy fix and the new ones look pretty nice too!

Aluminum discs? 😯
Pagid from Euro Car Parts seem to be ok on the car sitting on the drive. Fitted months ago and still have a fair bit of shiny edge and hub after the damp winter. Watch for an offer and use topcashback to get them cheaper (10% off delivered).
Shouldn't the thread title be "car breaks" ?
Soz mol.
😉
Sandwich. Thatll be the zinc coating i talked about.

No, not a joke! Mate told me to make sure I took his isopropyl alcohol to clean them up and yes, they had some sort of oily grease all over them to prevent rusting in the pack I assume, so I cleaned it off. I said at the time I am surprised that they don't have something that burns off in use... I guess you are saying that whatever it is, does just scrape/burn off?
I agree some do.... But not all.
Usually greased ones comein grease paper too.
The zinc coating on mine wore off the brake track tand remained on the rest.
Well I went to Euro Carp Arts for some fishy paintings, but they also had Eicher and Pagid, so I went with Pagid. Thanks folks.
I've also heard that heavy braking causes everything to go rusty more quickly!
Molgrips, get someone with a clue to do your discs and pads. Corrosion is only a big deal on things that stand so long that the braking surface pits, and no anti corrosion coating is going to last very long once the brakes are on the car and in use.
If there's a big lip on the outside of the disc, it's going to need replacing because it's below the minimum thickness anyway. If you do things properly and actually check the disc thickness, generally you'll be changing both discs and pads at the same time.
Anyway. Pagid and Brembo make a load of OE brake parts. Mintex are sound too. Pads are much much more important than discs. That said, all pads need to perform within 15% of OE to get an e mark.
I give it 3 months before we have a "how do I replace my ABS pump" thread...
Fit loads of Bosch at work, excellent quality everything fits as it should, including the built in wear wires which are common on VAG vehicles brakes.
In the finest of STW traditions I'll recommend what I have, which isn't on your list, Mintex. I warped the bejazzle out of a set of Brembos in kinda short order, wasn't delighted- did slightly wonder if they were legit tbh. Big car, lead foot but still- shouldn't have happened.
