Bought car last week from a main dealer 2nd hand Almera Tino (see last week thread).
My neighbour who is a mechanic fitted rear pads on during the week.
Today driving on the motorway a burning/getting hot smell started nothing to bad, parked car came back and ABS light has come on...
Before I go to my neighbour I will contact the dealership tomorrow (monday) to see what they say ? Are they responsible ? Its a week into my possesion and I can't see how fitting pads could/would cause this.
Cooked sensor perhaps ? Any thoughts to what it could be ?
Help ! And thanks in advance
Frozen handbrake cable ?
checked that its definatly not on
If you can smell burning it would suggest sensor is okay

If you got the car from a dealer, why didn't you get them to sort the pads?
Sticky handbrake cable is the mostly likely cause, but were the pistons definitely wound back when the pads were changed? Have you jacked up the car and spun the wheels by hand?
ok thats a good start...does this sound like a major problem then ?
when pads put on maybe the handbrake needs adjusting ? simple as that ?
Probably a dozen handbrake. Seeing as your neighbour has changed the pads I fail too see how you could expect the dealer to be responsible!! Why did you not get them to change he pads before you picked it up.
dealership said pads were okay ! had a tyre changed and they were lowwwwwwwww ! so my neighbour did them no harm in that...

dealership said pads were okay !
You pay dealer prices for a dealer service though. I.e. any hint of a problem and the car should go back for them to fix
it was my choice to change the pads there was a few 1000s left on them Im an4l about pads so i had them changed where I get them changed is my choice dealer would have charged over £120 !
*UPdate I have jacked the car both sides and wheels turn freely slight scraping on left hand side more like a pad rubbing noise but ever so slight.
I don't want to be slated over who is responsible or where I should have had them changed I just want to try and diagnose problem...
Pads probably were low - had it been ypu footing bill dealer would have changed them .
Im going with stuck piston or not wound back right - good luk with the dealer after you have been medling .
I wouldnt go shouting at neighbour though wont do anyone any good and youll get no favours in future
trail_rat thank you for seeing my point with the neighbour...
Just a +1 for all the comments re either handbrake or stuck piston. Is it both sides or just one? (should be easy to find the heat, but don't tough the disc as it'll be hot as hell)
If it's a fitting error, obviously not the dealership's issue but if the calipers are seized then your neighbour didn't cause it- though, frankly, should probably have noticed it.
I forgot to say that the dealer DID change the front pads on day of purchase as they were low, so low it was mentioned on the MOT so they had no choice but to change them...may be just maybe ?

pvssy, get the Bombers sharpened!
both sides seem to have the smell at the rear...
spoke to my neighbour
he said callipers were okay discs a little worn but not excessive smell he said could be new pads wearing/bedding in it does happen some times they smell....ABS light bad luck could have happened anytime !
will take car to him as the pistons/
hand brake may need adjusting....but why would this make the ABS light come on ?
Right. Wild stab in the dark - The new pads were NOT Nissan pads, probably pattern copies?
If so (and I think I'm right) then I reckon they were a bit thicker than they should be and caused the brakes to bind and overheat. Either the heat boiled the fluid and brought the light on or the system was constantly trying to release the brakes and couldn't and got an error message of some sort. The binding caused the smell (and the heat)
Now you've driven it the pads have worn a bit and are no longer binding. Lets just hope the ABS light goes off now and you've not boiled the brakes too badly.....
Yes. I have had brake pads do this to me in the past, the discs were glowing bright red!
bendix pads (by honeywell)

Update
Dropped car at the dealership yesterday morning.
Got a call this morning abs sensor faulty that's going to be £300 sir!
My reply I bought the car 6 days ago- his reply you got it at a trade price- my reply I'm not a trader ! To cut a long story short of backwards and forwards banter I have agreed to pay £50 towards the cost.
Only reason I agreed to contribute was it was the only way it was going to get resolved maybe I should have stood my ground !
£50 is a lot less than paying for a sensor alone. Although where they get £300 for replacing a sensor is anyone's guess. Normally its perhaps a 30mins job from start to finish to replace one. The sensors themselves are usually around £80+.
Oh and if theres a chance that the fluid has boiled, probably worth bleeding both rear calipers through to get some fresh fluid in there. But given the dealers doing the work I'd make sure they do that too.
Why would the fluid have boiled ?
£213 for the sensor from Nissan £ 60 from euro parts !
Why would the fluid have boiled ?
Because of the heat build up in the discs, pads and caliper...i.e. the thing you smelt.
