[#1806983]

Got a new Windows 7 laptop as my old XP one died. Used to connect my serial (non-usb) Etrex Summit via a Belkin Serial USB adapter, no problem at all,

Windows 7 won't even recognise it. Can't find any drivers for the Belkin for Win7.

Really missing plotting my routes using Tracklogs, uploading to the GPS and simply following the arrows.

Anybody solved a similar problem?

highclimber - probably not, considering the Etrex is a serial device utilising a serial to USB connector produced by Belkin.

if its not a Summit HC and just a Summit then the drivers on the link won't work but if it is it might.

It's not drivers for the GPS you need by the sounds of it, it's drivers for the USB-serial cable? Is there a model number on it or anything?

Belkin's reply is that the serial cable is not compatible with Win7, and they're not going to release any drivers 🙂

Off to PC World it is then!

There is a good solution...

Belkin, as you've already found out, are not supporting win7 or any 64bit OS. The part, and it's the same part as Garmin OEM, is essentially defunct. Garmin are not offering any replacements.

However... there is a technology called FTDI which IS supporting all the latest OS's and in fact it installs automatically on Win7. You can get these from easysync for about £12. We're using these now for testing backwards compatibility at TrackLogs and it's our recommended part. They also look quite good and flash blue when talking if that does it for you.

The full story is on the TrackLogs support centre here (linky no likey ampersands?)

Digimap - Cheers for the email.

Just placing an order for the suggested adapter.

Big fan of Tracklogs here 🙂

That's really good to know; USB / serial cables are a very mixed bag, and it's a problem for network engineers because a lot of kit requires serial ports to talk to comms gear. There are a lot of bad cables out there, to a point where engineers where I work specifically get laptops with 'real' serial ports.

I'll have to check that lot out, could be the end of a lot of headaches. British company too. Nice one.

I've never had problems with USB-serial cables. Always bought mine off ebay and got the drivers free off the internet.

To the OP, do you want to have a quick go with a free driver? Obviously the Belkin cable could be incompatible but really, it's a standard RS232 interface, I should imagine most of them are identical inside.
