My 17 yr old son past his test on Saturday and I fully expected the insurance to be expensive but cannot get it for less than 4000 pounds on any group 1 car!! No that isnt a typo

Has anybody got any tips or recommend an ins co?

I have tried with my name on his policy, not fronting before anybody suggests it, my wifes name and even his sisters, shes 20 and paid £900 for her first insurance at 17 on a Ford Ka

Get him on a pass plus course. It will cost a couple of hundred quid but will make him a safer driver and can cut 25% off the insurance premium.

You may also be cheaper to get an any driver policy if you can find one.

Go to a broker - they have access to insurers who don't always show up on the comparison sites.

Heard the other day lots of insurers don't recognize the pass plus test now..

I'm in the process of renewing my insurance.. last year £344, this year £540.. I've made no claims and have no points so how has it gone up £200!!!

Insurance company's are just thieves. Might be worth getting a mag like Top Gear, they quite often have adverts for companies who specialize in younger drivers

IIRC the stats for 17 year old drivers is pretty mental. Something like 40% of them crash in the first 6 months.
When you're looking at that sort of crash rate, and the cost of car repairs, then the figure doesn't seem unreasonable.
Doesn't help you though!

A few more things to consider there guys, thanks

Ill send him down to the local brokers this afternoon, his instructor mentioned pass plus so we will look into that too.
I have read the stats too and he was fully prepared to pay £1500ish, with my help, but these quotes are taking the michael!

My own insurance has gone up too Martyn, £238 to £385 and i haven't made any claims either!

Footman James do a young driver policy - also go for limited miles and a large excess.

Nah, it's just an increase in fraudulent claims, which understandably increase in times of recession. Some companies are exiting the market due to it no longer being profitable.

One of our friends had some success with Admiral multi-car for 3 people and 3 cars. You'll need to talk to an operative though to sort it out.
Quotations aren't much better for our 18 year old. £1800 for 98 Micra 1.0!
