[#1842202]

I'm getting cold feet about a deal I'm part way through on the classifieds. Buyer contacted me by email and when I asked for his STW username (to check him out) he admitted he didn't have one; he found the ad through Google. Anyway, he has paid via Paypal and asked me to ship to the Netherlands branch of his employer, who will forward to their Australian office (he's in Sydney). He has given me the address of both branches, as I did look into shipping direct to Aus first of all. Googling the company checks out, but I still have concerns as I know Paypal can be reversed. Hence my question, if I refund and get him to transfer to my wife's Aussie account (coincidence!) am I safe?

wow - this sounds all a bit complex.
Plot line for CSI perhaps.

Can you not wait until his paypal payment is in your account?

I'd tell him thanks but thanks too complicated.

Is it a lot of money? The reason I ask is you don't appear to have had anything really expensive for sale (from a quick glance at the classifieds) or indeed anything that would be cost effective to send to OZ even via The Netherlands.

All seems a bit odd.

I'd walk away from that one. Give him his money back & explain your concerns.

For the paypal protection you have to post direct to the address held in paypal, otherwise all bets are off. You also need to check the courier, one of the criteria is that it is fully tracked, a scribble on delivery (such as recorded) isn't good enough.

Does his email come from his company account? Get him to send you an email from work to prove he does actually work there.

What's the problem? He's paid, so you send. End of.

Just transfer the money out of Paypal first. It only takes a few days! Simple. 🙂

Marge/PP

IIRC the money can still be reversed even if it has been transferred out of the OP's a/c. Paypal then debit the registered card.

That's what he's concerned about. Bit late now the deal has been done !

My concern is chargeback, I don't think emptying my Paypal account will make a difference as it's directly linked to my bank account. From Paypal:

A chargeback happens when a buyer asks their credit card issuer to reverse a transaction that has already cleared. This can mean that a payment you’ve received in your PayPal account could be reversed, even if you’ve already posted the goods – which can of course be frustrating.

PayPal will help you as much as possible if you wish to dispute a chargeback, but the final decison lies with the credit card company. However you can also get covered by PayPal's seller protection.

WHY DO CHARGEBACKS OCCUR?

There are a few reasons why a buyer would request a chargeback:

An unauthorised payment was made with the buyer's card
The buyer didn't receive the item that was paid for
There were errors in processing the transaction
The item does not match its description
The maximum time a buyer has to file a chargeback with their credit card company is typically 120 days (or 180 days for a buyer outside the UK). Certain exceptions may apply.

So maybe not quite end of 😉

Sorry I wouldn't.

I wouldn't- I'd return the money back to the email address that paid the OP AND NO OTHER EMAIL ADDRESS no matter what the buyer says. Just send it straight back.

Even if the seller says 'ok, send it to this one as my account is maxed out on this'. It could be a spammed paypaller that he used (and you'd get charged back anyway) then you'd end up paying out twice. When you try getting the money back from the second email addy provided Paypal wont want to know.

I'm guessing as the transaction went on the seller started revealing more info which is why you are in the mindset. Do it. Don't bother apologising too much.

I wouldn't do it - could very easily be a stolen paypal account.

Wasted some time looking into the chap (for fun):

The paypal account is in his "mum's name", but it does match the surname of his email address. Googling his email address brings up a freelance industrial designer in Sydney. No obvious link to the yachting sports wear company he asked the wheel to be shipped to.

Think I'll refund the Paypal payment of £83. Thanks one and all.

For the sake of £83, not worth the hassle!
