I've just finished my C2C, camping all the way. Sunderland was a big, big let down. No artwork or nothing, not even a sign to mark the end/start?
Weather was poor/ok, the climbs were very hard in places and not to be looked at lightly, esp the one out of Stanhope.
Cheers
Not done the Sustrans one, but a few years ago I did the "Wheelwright" one, which follows Wainwrights rambler C-to-C (as far as is possible with our incredibly restricted bike access laws) A superb route. (Mostly)
Houns

Ai i realised they were from the same spot after i posted

Yes, I did Workington-Sunderland 3 weeks ago! We were very lucky with the weather.
Certainly Workington and Sunderland were the low points, not just altitude-wise. We entered Sunderland along the river and things did improve in the last couple of miles (unlike Puncture Alley before that, with all the graffiti-ed bridges and awkward access gate things).
What on earth were you doing climbing out of Stanhope? That's the roadie option! We climbed onto the moors out of Rookhope and it was brilliant, with a strong wind blowing us out of the singletrack.
Did you do Old Coach Road and Nenthead Mines options?
I didn't find the climbs that bad - longest was Hartside and really it was just a matter of keeping going.
I guess the weather makes a big difference. And maybe the company? Me and my friend had a lot of fun. Best ride of the year. Would do it again. Especially day 2 Penrith to Rookhope, where the height and scenery were amazing and the long long descents really enjoyable.
Did the Sustrans C2C last summer.
Wasn't something I'd thought of doing but I was invited to join an already arranged trip and gave it a go.
I borrowed some panniers and rode it on a Rockhopper with slicks on.
I really enjoyed it.
We did it in three days staying at B&Bs on the way.
Would love to do the off-road C2C but don't have the time.
Yeah, we did the road version so Stanhope was on the route.
road Whitehaven to Tynemouth with a head wind and rain - having an attractive women throw bread at me from a block of flats (aiming for the ducks in the river she claimed) was a highlight of the Tyneside part - did the road ride in 2 days - the offroad must be a much much harder proposal
