Wow. I think it's the addition of the flags that gives it the air of dignity that it otherwise lacks
It’s strange that these things get erected to remember people who generally are not nice people.
Colston, Rhodes blah blah
That the relatives think it's a good idea when the bloke was a scumbag is mind boggling.
That’s no more gaudy or vulgar than, let’s say, the Albert Memorial
Taj Mahal?
Great Pyramid?
Mausoleum of Halicarnassus?
Or this one. Allegedly the second biggest monument to a dead wife in the world.

Rather more conspicuous than a patio isn't it?
That the relatives think it’s a good idea when the bloke was a scumbag is mind boggling.
I assume there's also an element of "Remember him. Remember us. Remember we're still here. See that memorial that everyone finds horrible? See how it's still here? See how the council/police are powerless to remove it?"
Never mind gaudy, it feels sinister to me.
If he really was as much of a scumbag as has been inferred, the continued intimidation of the community he victimised in life can't be ignored as a factor in constructing this monstrosity.
Have to feel sorry for anyone who's recently buried someone there and is trying to grieve in dignity with that circus going on.
It isn't inferred he was a scumbag - he definitively was a scumbag.
If the fly-tipped monstrosity is removed the chavs will be mightily pissed-off...disrespecting our way of life and other outpourings of shit; media interviews with 'still grieving widow and children' - salt of the earth, great family man, would do anything to help, wouldn't hurt anyone etc etc
So now the widow is threatening riots if any attempt is made to remove it.
