It always used to amuse me when Spike in [i]Buffy[/i] called people a w****r! I've heard it used in other American programmes as well.
Back in the 18th Century, I think it was, Americans complained loudly about 'Britishisms' corrupting their American English! Bill Bryson wrote about it in [i]Mother Tongue[/i].

I remember years ago Phil Collins being interviewed about an acting part (in Miami Vice I think) and saying how his script was peppered with 'w*@$%rs'. The script writers had no idea what it meant they just thought it was something brits said a lot
