[#638975]

Lately Ive found myself feeling bored/depressed with life in general, there are obvious certain bits I enjoy but it all seems quite monotonous at the moment.

Have lost a bit motivation to do things like ride my bike (i couldnt be bothered over the weekend, even though it was really good whether) and Ive found myself sitting at my computer doing **** all

Im almost looking forward to going into work tomorrow, which cant be a good sign. When Im not keeping my mind occupied, then I tend to start thinking Im wasting my life and should be doing something far more interesting.

Anyone else feel like this sometimes?

too damn busy - in last 5 years I've renovated 2 houses and had 2 kids and currently attempting to do a PhD in my part time - glutton for punishment !

The diet thing could possibly be a reason, although I think I have a fairly healthy diet, no meats for me.

Perhaps moving to another country for a bit or something like that could be the answer, change of scenery and that.

David, sometimes you need to step back and chill. Also check your diet, plenty fresh fruit and veg. Cut out the stodge. Cut right down on tea and coffee and drink plenty water. Go down the library, read a couple of books. Most importantly get plenty of sleep.

Watch "Seasons" by the Collective, usually ignites my mojo. 🙂

Well do just it then ! What's to stop you ?

Do something different. Anything. Learn something new. It doesn't have to be something which changes your life in a material way - as long you're enjoying it, that's what matters. If you're enjoying life, then you're not wasting it.

Try eating some meat, then. You sound anaemic to me. 😉

Don't make the mistake of thinking moving to another country will change anything unless you have a strong desire to do so.

Sounds just like ennui to me.

Learn a new skill, find a hobby, get out on your bike

Yep 🙁

...but its summer so I'm going to make the most of it and try and stay positive 🙂

By coincidence it was a move to another country a few years ago that all went a bit wrong then a move back to UK that has caused me to go through low periods

Well Im not really a materialist so perhpas nows a good time to start. Maybe I should spend a load on a new car or bike, although Ive always found the 'new' feeling wears off after a while and you end up looking for something else.

Get yourself a job working at a jobcentre with one of the worst rates of violent incidents in the UK. Then you will never look forward to going into work, and even Epping forest at the weekend will seem like fun.

Anyway, your depression sounds mild to moderate, go tell your doctor. When I don't keep my mind occupied I'm obsessed and terrified by the unanswerable questions regarding death and where space ends, and what contains space..etc ad nauseum.

Yeh, I find I do this alot, is it related to my above problem?

What are you supposed to think about when your not doing anything?

Of course there's nothing to say that life is meant to be happy and fulfilling. So an absence of either isn't necessarily indicative of something being wrong, just not quite what you'd like.

meh. I was 'bored' for a year or so. and then it got worse and worse and I started getting bored and miserable to the point where I didn't function in society at times.

if you're still bored in a few months time, you might want to think about why you're not feeling so great.

otherwise, have fun trying new things 🙂

More than likely. It's an anxiety linked to depression.

What are you supposed to think about when your not doing anything?

As facetious as it sounds, I try to occupy my mind by thinking about having sex with a few relatively attractive colleagues and some of the "customers" all day long. Seriously.

You're not alone in that one Dr Dolittle!

davidtaylforth; this may sound really trivial but find a really long tv series to watch and some stupid, little, really addictive game to play! Then when you can, try to force yourself to go riding as much as possible and set yourself some ACHIEVABLE! challenges to focus your mind on

you're not meant to worry about things like:

'I should be doing more with my time'
'I should have ridden my bike instead of doing nothing'
'I should be making more of my life'

those thoughts alone are fine by themselves of course, but if you find these repeating in your head (and more importantly, not acting on said thoughts), you'll just feel rubbish every time you have time to think too much

I guess that's where getting a hobby comes into it. or get a more stressful job if you like

Do you ever think about killing yourself?

I sometimes sort of get urges too, not very often and its not when Im at a 'low point' or anything.

For example, I was on a stag weekend a couple of weeks ago and I was stood at the top of a very high stair case with my friends messing about. There was a shaft down the middle of the stairs to the bottom floor and had quite a strong urge to jump off, just to see what it would be like. Obviously I didnt.

To be honest, rather than thinking about implausible encounters with single mothers, I should be reading more Buddhist literature regarding impermanence. That's my "do as I say, not as I do" advice...Anyway, remind yourself (or admit) that it's depression. There's a lot of suggestions out there that work/help.

Maybe I should start watching TV

I always thought TV was meant to keep people safe and at home but maybe it just stops them going insane. Most people I know tend to watch TV but I never bother.

I spent a lot of time watching TV on my PC last year as I had nothing else to do and it just meant my mind was doing something! Just got to make sure that you don't spend all your time watching it!

I'm feeling pretty unproductive, no riding since Easter and now been off work for 2 weeks due to a bad back and will be for a bit longer - I have done naff all and feeling a bit guilty that I'll be paid for it. I'm usually a fidget, but discovering that absolute nothing can be quite pleasant. If only it was on my own terms.

Anyway, what I'm saying, is sometimes it's fine to sit back and watch life pass by. Hell, I'm going to be charging flat out again once I'm fixed, until I crash and burn again. I have so much pent up enthusiasm for stuff, I'm sure yours is just building

I'd suggest just sticking to a Lovefilm movie subscription personally.
There have been many nights when I've retired to my pit in a futile rage after observing a manifestation of how the metropolitan elites think we live, and what they think we want to watch. Just not my cup of tea, not my world.

The suicidal aspect in your thoughts is a wake up call though. Go see your GP and have a candid chat. There's nothing to lose, so don't make a big deal of it.

David - lifes like that.

Here'the cure - set goals - do something different (sky diving, etc) just have something a bit different to look forward to.

Depending on your circumstances if you think your wasting your life its probably time to stop the bus and get of for a while. Take a sabatical and bugger off to India / OZ / Kiwi land - clear your head and do some quality thinking

Doc I find a good scud book and a ham shank usually fixes it for me...

I've had a lot of time on my hands lately since i finished my degree. i got sacked, my girlfriend got deported, i finally got my first decent job and then i got ill and lost my job because of it. Sometimes it gets me down, it feels like everyone else is having a good life and i'm stuck here in mine. Its just an illusion. I ride my bike and play my guitar and thats what keeps me sane. Buy a guitar and learn a few tunes, it's amazing how relaxed i feel afterwards - keeps the brain active 🙂

I’m just getting over my latest bout of the depression; mine was full on now on 45mg of mirtazapine.
It started pretty much as you’ve described, did the usual man thing and left it, ended up off work for 2 months.
It sounds like you’ve got mild depression, have a word with your doctor.
All the best

In short? Nah! Often feel like ****ting idiots but that could be part of a whole lot of other crap - I've had a few friends that topped them selfs, two with guns and the only thing that everyone was left with was what a waste.

Docs right seek medical advice if you feel that way - the Dr will probably refer you to a specialist. But seriously set goals, have something to look forward to, it doesnt have to be big! Even go and help others, get involved. You can either be the passenger on the bus or the driver is my thinking.

sometimes it's hard to see that point of view without ever coming close to the edge but he is 100% right. Set a goal of smiling to a pretty girl you see walking down the street. I bet she smiles back. little things like that remind you that life is good!

what are people's experiences of telling their GP that they think they might be mildly depressed?

Just curious, 'cause mine were:

'You sound like you're bored, not depressed'
and
'You might have mild depression. here is a prescription for some anti-depressants'

What else do they do/say in the situation?

Doc I find a good scud book and a ham shank usually fixes it for me...

After my obsession avoidance techniques as described above have been utilsed throughout the working day, the chicken is choked or the missus has been disciplined by channel four news time. And thus, five hours of lonely existential angst spread out before me, enlived only by the occassional scrap here or on the Guardian's CIF forum. It's no way to live, and I'd like others to avoid these lifestyle pitfalls.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Sounds as though there are some aspects of your life your not happy with possibly? Maybe career, relationships, family issues?

I know I have a habit of comparing my life to that of my friends and peers and also have a fear of missing out on things that all mmy mates are doing. This sometimes leads me to question whether I'm making the most of my life but then I remind myself that I'm happy and I cant possibly do EVERYTHING my friends do.

You could always get yourself a copy of this? http://www.bookofcool.com/

LOL

Serious answer - It might be mild depression / the beginnings of depression - it might not. Myself I doubt it but it worth exploring. Your GP is someone to go to but don't expect miracles in one 10 min consultation.

I am a big fan of counselling. Pills for depression are only a treatment not a cure and IMO only for a few months anyway.

I will repeat don't "set off to see the world" - what might happen is you end up in the same mood somewhere else - and then its worse as you have no one you know around you. I have been there. Its a very black place indeed

If you really want to travel then do so - but it is no cure for what you are feeling right now IMO

tankslapper - ruddy heck - I didn't expect that from you. Very nice

Its the Desiderata by Max Erhmann

It helped give me (some) perspective over the years. We all go through not so good stuff, what do they say? Into every life falls a little rain. I believe you are here for a reason, not always apparent, but if that's helping someone, being a mate, fitting in then that's it.

With me I've always tried to combine interests - it may surprise some to learn that my interests include mountain biking and yacht racing but I mix that with things like gardening, reading and an appreciation of art - I'm no officianado, I do it for me! I have even kept bees for years, would love to again, certainly a good way to take your mind of things. As an ex-forest manager I love trees, and woodland management mountain biking allows me to cycle in some of the best places in the Welsh Marches and Mid Wales and criticise the hell out of woodland management techniques or lack of it! 😆

Doing nothing is not an option
