Can you fit a bike in the boot, without putting the seats down? Obviously wheels off, but does it fit? Now sure on the model year, but its the model previous to the current version.

Cheers

Depends on the bike, but basically yes. Have to put it diagonally across the luggage space, mind you.

I can get my bike in my E39 saloon, although it was a case of wheels, handlebars and seat off.

You should be fine in a touring.

I am sure there was a good thread on this a few months ago.

Well I can stick my bike in the boot of our smaller 3 series Touring (current shape) with wheels off so shouldn't be an issue in a 5er!

5 Series tourings have MASSIVE boots

I've had a couple of E34's (4 generations old now) but fold the seats forward (a 3 second job) and any of my bikes would go in with the wheels on, so after a ride, I could just throw the bike in the back without taking anything off it!

mboy, I have to take issues with you on this. A 5-series Touring has a respectable boot, but not much more. I had an E39 and followed it with an E-class, which was a whole load bigger and a lot more usable.

You're right though, you'd easily get a full bike in with seats down

I think depends on your frame size. A small frame will (in Matt's case ;O) but I ride a large and that wont go in a A6 and will probs be difficult in the 5

You can fit a medium Pace 405 in the back of a Touring - wheels and seat off. Don't have to remove or even loosen and turn the bars so its pretty quick to do.

Yes, very true.

My example above was with a XL frame.

I used to have an E39 - anod no you could'nt get a bike in the boot without seats down or wheels off. Seats down was far easier IMHO!

If you want a large boot - look at the mercedes e-class or even a Mondeo.

BMW are okay size wise but not outstanding.

Does the OP want the bike in the boot, seat up and luggage cover over to keep it out of sight? Not just in the back?

That would be nice but the main reason is to load the bike in the car without putting the seats down so as not to take out the child seats. If it fits with the load cover in place, great, but its no deal breaker. The other option is an audi A6 Avant, but im not sure if the bke will fit in there either.

It's the width that's the killer. My A4 and most of the german estates I've driven have the load areas squared off where the wheel arches intrude so you loose space that rear dropouts and handlebars can slot into. Mondeos and vectras don't do this so tend to be beter for odd shaped items like bikes. That said, I can get my road bike in complete and mtbs with the seat off no problem (with rear seats folded flat) but struggle to get even the road bike in the boot with seats up.
Only answer is take the bike to the dealer. I did this when buying the zafira and they didn't bat an eyelid, seemed a perfectly sensible thing to want to check.

Make sure your bike is clean first though ๐Ÿ˜†

you can get 5 in the back of a mondeo estate with bars loose, 4 with bars normal & all pedals on. I'd imagine a 5series will take 1 ok

If it's german estates that are your thing. You can get a bike(s) in the back of a E class with the wheels off. Big old buses!

If you want proper rear suspension in an estate car, you have to lose space to suspension struts.

This and the rear-wheel drive.

I love my 5-Series touring (have the Alpina version that goes like the proverbial of a shovel), but I didn't buy it for boot space. It's ok, but as others have said, there are bigger load areas for that size of car. For day-to-day use I run a Thule roof-rack, but occasionally have put bikes in the boot, either seats down (faff coz I have to remove the kids seats too), or both wheels off and seatpost out.

I don't seem to suffer from RWD or suspension.

I can get two bikes in the boot of my A6 Avant with seats up, wheels off.
Though one was a road bike. Wheels off obviously.
Or with the cover pulled over i can easily get one bike and riding kit. Normally don't have to take the seatpost out either.
On my old 3 Series Touring (current shape) I could get a singlespeed in the boot seats up but not a geared bike.
