I’m there. Just followed a couple of you.
I’m @mrstevious.bsky.social
Joined up.... ourmaninthenorth
just having a nosey. never really got on with twitter/X, hashtags, tweets, retweets and all that palarver. if i didnt get on with that, should i stay away from this? same sort of thing?
I've just joined – it seems quite quiet so far but my faves from X (FessHole and AnonOpin) are there, along with an official Leeds United channel so it's good. Unfortunately, my kids' school isn't on there yet but I am sure it will happen. @harrogatemike
ColourNoise - your Bluesky name is one of those that one has to reread a couple of times. Thought you were a svelte wave rider 😉
I'm there as @sussexepic.bsky.social - not that I'm posting anything [useful]
Copied from Dave Troy on Twitter (so you don’t have to click a Twitter link)
/IMPORTANT thread about Bluesky, for those fleeing there. Folks know that it was seeded by Jack Dorsey around a libertarian vision of a magical network that wouldn’t need moderation because it would be decentralized and baked into a protocol (somehow).
2/The people who aided Dorsey in pursuing this vision were other libertarian/post-rationalists connected with effective altruism and other online anarchist movements. One network called TPOT (‘that part of Twitter’) was instrumental. It carried over into Bluesky’s founding DNA.
3/Someone made the visualization above in 2023, showing the TPOT/EA network quite clearly. EA as you know is part of TESCREAL and the belief systems that have driven Sam Bankman Fried and Elon Musk. SBF also put money into Musk’s Twitter buy.
4/Now that Dorsey has bailed, Bluesky’s DNA is basically TPOT people but without a funding source. Who is going to win in that scenario? I don’t know, but I’m not putting money on the users.
5/Bluesky’s most recent funding round was provided by Blockchain Capital LLC. What do those folks want from their investment? I don’t know. But that’s the question to be asking. Crypto money outspent Big Oil in this cycle … to the tune of $200mm.
So anyway it’s fun to call it “the good place” but the fact is users will likely once again get a rude awakening when it either collapses or is captured by Musk, or worse. You’re using a free service on someone else’s dime; you should ask what they want from you.
7/More on that Blockchain Capital LLC funding round here.
10/?It get’s worse. Blockchain Capital LLC was co-founded by Steve Bannon pal Brock Pierce, a major crypto advocate, perennial presidential candidate, and close friend of Eric Adams. Pierce has dozens of other shady MAGA/Russia ties as well.

Which is true, ultimately I think Bluesky will end up being funded by some sort of advertising but it's structured in such a way as to make an ElMo style takeover much harder.
…time to move to Truth Social!
Rumour (which may have been someone having a laugh) that X and TS are going to merge. I think that's doubtful as the banks who lent ElMo the money for X might have something to say about it.
Any service that you don't pay for (and some that you do) will be subject to enshittification. It's inevitable. In the mean time, Bluesky is a far better place than Xitter, and probably Threads too.
Has something just changed? I have like three followers on bsky, I've just had like 100+ new ones in the last 24 hours.
@ukcougar.bsky.social
Is Bluesky moderated - do they have the processes and resources setup to remove offensive material and bots?

I've just read the long post above so possibly not. I left twitter a few months before the current grand exodus because of all the rightwing bullshit and disinformation. But I do miss the breaking news side of it.
I'll see how it develops - if Bluesky works out and has a strong current affairs/politics game than I may join later
Well I've just found fesshole on there so I'm pretty pleased
@olddog Yes, it all seems to happen pretty efficiently. How is a different question I don’t know the answer to.
Cougar, you may have been put on a “starter list” of people to follow for some particular topic.
but whatever, pretty much everyone I followed on Twitter is now on bsky so that’s that.
The only problem is it’s still the plaything of a bunch of tech bros liable to enshittify the minute it starts to be significant. Ho hum.
Edit: sorry I do usually read threads before posting!
Im on Bluesky, essentially just to read a few journos etc after binning twitter in the summer.
i seem to pick up followers quite regularly, almost exclusively on the back of liking a post - the poster often follows me. I have no idea why, I am not saying or posting anything on my own account other than a picture of a dog etc, and they don't comment or like my dog so I am assuming it's a another reason. Or they are just weird.
I’ve signed up and spent the last few hours searching for my Twitter follows and I’ve found 50 out of 106, out of those 50 only 6 have any posts.
So back to Twitter it is.

Have they got their tits out? Most of my followers on "a social media site previously known as Twitter" have since Elon took over.

There's a chrome plug in that will do that for you, blue sky bridge or something.
not on chrome, bog standard safari does me fine

I use Safari as my default too, but not installing an alternative browser for a one off task to save you hours of work seems a bit counter productive!
^ what can I say in my defence?…………….I’m just weird
Twitter users *rolls eyes and sighs* 🙂
Having had a go with Threads I've joined Bluesky now. Seems more like Twitter before it went bab.
Followed some of you, @brocklanders.
I might have to sign up to this Bluesky malarkey.
I've just seen Twitter/X described as an 'online Nazi bot sewer'.
That couldn't be more accurate IMO.
Minimal effort and pictures of mtb/hills/dogs from me on swearyprof.bsky.social. My output will improve once Keeper of the peak (@kofthep) switches over there.
It's a nice place to be.
Is there any appetite for a STW feed/starter pack? If so will put something together in front of the telly later.
I’d follow an STW members feed.

Happened yesterday
Anyone know if it's possible to follow a hashtag? If I click on one it'll bring up loads of results but I can't seem to save the search.
This will be the link to the list https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:7zra35cygaahtxsifwyldwzz/lists/3laz4qoe43q24 - can someone check they can see it?
Please can you DM me, here if it’s working or at @andydrummond.bsky.social if you’d prefer, if you don’t mind being added to it.
Sorry, try now?

Academia around environmental politics and rural geography mainly. I don't really do social media so will see how it pans out. Happy to see some biking stuff in my feed though ?
How does the list work then? Does it compile all the posts people in the list have commented on?
This may help explain the basics
I must be getting old, I’ve no desire to join social media. Convince me there’s a reason I should…

Looks fine to me.
I'm very happy to see most of hte orgs I used to follow on Twitter are here now so it will be interesting to see how it works. Twitter was just too toxic to submit yourself to regularly

You can discuss bikes and things, sometimes there is even a magazine.
Has anyone investigated any of the 3rd party apps for Bluesky? I'm finding having to to the top of my feed to get it to refresh and scroll back to where I was is killing the experience. I just want to be able to scroll 'up' till I hit the latest post.
So - the list. If you can see it, there should be an option to ‘Pin to Home’ and then it will appear at the top of your feed (a bit like the ‘Following’/‘For You’ tabs in X).
When you open it you should see a feed of posts by people on the list, and then a sub-tab with the list members. I’ve been adding people but as above please DM me if you’ve been missed off, or if you want taking off it.
Joined, and already unimpressed at seeing barrister Naomi Cunningham flagged for “intolerance” for posting legal opinions on her area of expertise. Agree or not, it looks like the platform has same sort of moderation Twitter used to have.
You know it’s reached some kind of critical mass when someone as social media resistant as me has signed up:

Mostly to make sure I own the name I use for work. I’ll set up another one for bikepacking type stuff if it gets any traction.
Also, it feels quite good to annoy Musk in even the teeny tiniest of ways.
