Birthday coming up for a financially broke alcoholic. Any ideas on what i can get that can't/wont be spent on booze? Ideally was thinking supermarket vouchers so at least a few grocery bills would be taken off the worry list for a few weeks but i worry they'll just get spent on booze instead of feeding the kids.

Any ideas?

If you give vouchers they will buy supermarket booze (if they really are that addictive). If you want them to eat then how about a HelloFresh subscription for a month?

Tricky one, as above most vouchers could be turned into alcohol (either directly or exchanging for cash with mates/guy in the pub). Possibly a bit personal to say you'd shop with them and pay for the groceries (or they give you a list and you do an online delivery to them).

Box meals are OK but are expensive for what you get and still need a fair bit of prep to turn into something edible so depends if he can/wants to cook/follow recipes.

Batch cook some nice meals that can be frozen/defrosted.

Why not try something like this. My bro uses this company as his local supermarket is crap.

Book tokens (do they still exist?) Gift cards for Apple store / Google Play / Xbox / Playstation as device-appropriate.

How about a supermarket delivery of shopping including a birthday cake? No worries about spending it on booze instead, good way to make sure they have the staples in?

Fruit and veg box as suggested by captainclunkz is a nice idea, if they have their sh1t together enough to cook from scratch.

You'd have to be pretty confident in your friendship there, that could be taken very badly by some.

I guess the more normal question is "what do you get someone who has everything?" instead of "what do you get someone who has nothing?"

In any case the answer is the same...

... a selection of fine cheeses and nibbles
