[#1769261]

I have a huge roof box which has served me well and may be making an appearance on the classifieds any day soon.

Reason being I need a box that will allow me to mount 1 bike carrier alongside it, basically a long thin one.

It will be a compromise as the current one is mahoosive but does anyone have any recommendations? Even the Thule "bag" type one looks OK, anyone have experience of these?

Thanks

I bought one of these a couple of years ago for the same reason.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_709089_langId_-1_categoryId_165500

It's been really good. They have a quick release bracket system which is really easy to use and one first set up is pretty much faff free.

I've never used any otrher type of roof box so can't comment on how this compares but it does what I wanted it to do.

we have a thule atlantis 600 or something similar half width, full lenght box. 300 litres or so.

Very good box, mounts very easily onto the aero bars I have, nice and quiet on the road, but the aerial does foul it, so I tape the aerial onto the box to stop it flapping.

With a bit of jiggling I get a bike carrier alongside a big Karrite box. It's basically 2m x 1m x 43cm, and the bike carrier is currently a Halfords one though I had a Thule on there bit it was nicked. Some of the recommended roof bars in the manufacturers tables are a bit narrow. I see no reason why the bars need to stop at the gutter of the car so long as it doesn't overhang the whole car, so could you get a bit more room that way?

Suggest you check out the Thule catalogue - all the boxes are listed, with dimensions. There are quite a few that meet your criteria

I used to use a very large roof box, about the same width as the roof, and managed to squeeze a bike carrier on there too.

As for selling it on the classifides, I tried to give mine away and got no takers.

There are lots on ebay and lots of bidders so that might be worth a try. Of course, they are collection only really so interest will probably depend a lot on where you are.

I'm collecting one I've just bought on ebay in a few minutes!

I use a Karrite Odyssey 360 roofbox - £150 from www.roofracks.co.uk it means i can fit 2 mountainbikes alongside it on my CMax. It works fine and is relatively aerodynamic.

Thanks guys for all of your advice.

I hadnt considered trying to get a carrier alongside the box I currently have so I will give that a try, must admit its useful having the large box and a long one would have a lower capacity.
From what you say Gary I cant even offset the cost against my old one!

Thanks again.
