So to counter - 'you should never buy domestic appliances for presents' argument, what have you bought that received a positive response?

For Christmas a couple of years ago I bought my wife an electric blanket. She'd been complaining of being cold in bed for weeks, so I took a punt on it.

She almost skipped around the room on Christmas morning, and it was duly installed on the bed before lunch!

I bought her a food processor the following year too - not quite as well received but it gets weekly use!

(She doesn't do jewellery, dresses, or other 'luxury' type goods though.)

After many years of naff presents from my in-laws, we were presented with a large box one year that turned out to be a camping stove; one of the double ones with grill underneath. We were well chuffed!!

Not quite the answer you want, but I hide mrsmidlife's gifts behind the hoover. She's never found them.

I got a temperature measuring spoon for my birthday. Will help with getting my custard right for ice cream making. I'm looking forward to first use this weekend.

Ex MIL couldn't work out why I wanted a really nice hand mixer for xmas a few yrs back - thought it was "wrong" to buy it as a present.
"Well don't bloody well ask me what I want in future" was my answer to the ex.......

In the last two weeks we have had to replace the tumble dryer and the dishwasher. Merry Christmas to us!

I got my OH a new fridge last year. Odd choice of present perhaps, but you should've seen her face light up when she opened it...

My ex-wife was none too happy when her mother asked me what I wanted and I said "3-part ladders, please" I received and was duly grateful.
