There are a number available it seems, but which is the best for lecturers escaping their students after a day in the field?

Have you been there, or just tempted by the flowers?

had a stag do at the YHA (soon to be closed, bastards) a few years back and got beers there. Nice it was too. Think there was Bluebird on (coniston brewery)

Got fish and chips up the street though.

The Sun Inn was ok when I went in last year for food, but it's not one of the better pubs in Hawkshead. It's a bit IKEA inside, if you know what I mean.

There's another pub just off the square where the Co-op is in the middle of the village - the food is good there. I think it's the Queens Head. There's also another pub almost opposite that's good for ale.

Stoner - how come the hostel is closing? It's a cracking place!

Thanks Gary. We might send the students to the Sun Inn while we head for the Queens Head...

+1 for the Queens Head.
Not cheap but very good food.

Sun Inn ideal for the students. LCD TVs long table / benches inside.

The Kings Arms is the best pub for sure, great food and great beer. the Sun is now like a trendy wannabe 'eatery'. Queens Head is OK, but the beer and food is so good in the Kings Arms there is no reason to go elsewhere IMHO of course. The Bulls Head in Coniston also does great beer of course, but its the other side of the hill....

Sun Cafe next to the Sun Inn is good. Just enough room for the staff to fit in without any students. Send somebody on ahead to put bags on the seats ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Queens is the best for food. Kings is very good but more of a drinking pub. Red Lion is poor.

Just outside the village are Drunken Duck and the Outgate Inn. Both very good for food.

The thread is getting more divergent as it goes on! I guess we'll have to try both the Kings and the Queens.

http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/news/cumbria/south_lakeland/grasmere/8842711.Three_Lake_District_youth_hostels_to_be_put_up_for_sale/

bunch of 'tards.

TWO youth hostels earmarked for closure in South Lakeland have been rescued by new owners pledging to keep them open.

But the news comes as the Youth Hostel Association announces three further closures in the Lake District.

Kendal and Grasmereโ€™s Thorney How hostels were to close in October 2011 after the YHA decided to sell the two sites to raise money for other projects.

But new owners have come forward and both parties want to continue running the buildings as hostel businesses.

MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron said: โ€œI worked very hard to ensure that the YHA took responsibility in the aftermath of their announced closures. Itโ€™s a shame to have lost that network in Kendal and Grasmere.โ€

But he was critical of the news that Hawkshead, Helvellyn and Derwent-water hostels will be put on the market at the end of the summer, with 16 staff at risk of redundancy.

โ€œThe decision to close the youth hostel in Hawkshead is one that should be met with huge regret.
