I want to stroll in to a pub in Coniston, eat some nice food, wash it down with a pint or three of good beer and read my book.

Any recommendations?

The Sun is my favourite. (up the hill). Last couple of times I've been to Conisiston I thought the Black Bull fine for a pint but the food average.

Sun has been 're-vamped' - food more expensive, tree cut down from the beer garden, dining room extended unsympathetically. Went to Black Bull - on balance now has the better (more generous, cheaper) food, lots of ale selection. Could have all changed by now though.

Torch and blanket required for reading - be careful out there.

Is this actively policed?
Will I be told off by a village bobby or be beaten to a pulp by a pack of rabid Cumbers?

Would it help if I hid the book in a copy of Razzle?

Wander along to torver and grab a pew in the pub there, church inn. Nice old bar, good food, great beer, and a buxom wench pulling pints. Mmmmm.....

The issue with Torver is the hour+ walk home.
(as I can't be absolutely certain I'd pull the buxom wench)

Don't forget the best cafe in Coniston :

http://www.thebluebirdcafe.co.uk/

But you will have to earn that stop first ๐Ÿ˜‰

Food at the Ship Inn out near the Old Hall campsite, then into Coniston for beer at the Black Bull.

Job done ๐Ÿ˜‰

(Alas the Ship is a Robinson's pub and the beer is, as a result, deeply average)

Black Bull.
Bowl Of Homemade Chilli washed down with a two pints of Bluebird XB.
Super - just what I needed after riding over Broughton Moor to Seathwaite and coming back over Walna Scar.

In the past would also have said the Sun, but last time I was there the "change" as is being discussed was in progress, and I wasn't impressed (price up, atmosphere and quality down).

Agree with either the Bull or the one in Torver being the better option.
