i'm a bit behind the times . tried a few in the past with mixed results ,
what's the current gold standard available (preferably free) that's reliable and easy to use?

Without more specific information...
I just use bluetooth or WiFi from within File Commander. File Commander being file management software with a free version available.

Just use Google Drive. You can access it from both devices, download only what's necessary and you have a backup.
