If you're into a bit of techno, Vegas by The Crystal Method is a great album. Nobody I know has heard of them but you will have heard some of their music.

You're going to have to try harder, I've heard of/got stuff by Neutral Milk Hotel, Mazzy Star, Townes Van Zandt, Tool.
[i]Eating February[/i], by Star 69 is a great album, the only one they did. Thrum are a great little band, Monica Queen, their singer, sounds a bit like Maria McKee, backed by Neil Young, actually Johnny Smillie. They formed in 1992, in Lanarkshire. Recorded an album in 1993, called [i]Rifferama[/i]. Broke up a bit later, and Monica went solo. I've just discovered, to my delight, that they got back together in 2011, and have an album in iTunes! I will be buying that very shortly.
Tiger were another terrific band, sort of post-punk, played drone guitars with only two or three strings, had a moderately successful album called [i]We Are Puppets[/i], and a final one called [i]Rosaria[/i].
Then there's The Violet Hour, The Julie Dolphin, 6 Day Riot, The Submarines, Sniff 'n' The Tears, Slingbacks, Drugstore, Linoleum, Sam Phillips, Redbird, Pony Up!, Oh Laura, Mulu, Monkey Swallows The Universe, Mechanical Bride... 😀

Saw Thrum in I think 13th Note back in the day.

Band I enjoyed was called The Smiles, superb live, big sound, quirky, all dressed in crushed velvet, some cracking tunes. They got signed and the stylists got to work, stripped their personalities out, and dumbed down the sound, real shame. Think they only has 1 single.....

Not exactly unheard of but I love Cosmo Jarvis. Akira The Don is good too.

I believe the OP was looking for something that wasn't mainstream. Yes they've sold sh*tloads in the US, but you'd be surprised of the amount of people who haven't heard of them over here.
