But how can you not pick:
Band I've not heard for 20 years and never will again
The sounds a bit like coldplay, frankly
The Radio 6 house band
Token reggae
@RustySpanner: Little Feat - definitely.
Queen.
Captain Beefheart & Magic Band.
As for two more - depends on my mood.
The Rubettes.
Damn it, I forget them and Showaddywaddy as well.
Baby Metal
Neil young and crazy horse
super furry animals
The jam
Gorkys zygotic mynci
Boo radleys(just for giant steps)
Dolly parton(with her bluegrass band)
Music threads are like politics, theirs are always the best:)
If we're allowed solo artists with a band then stick Lenny Kravitz on the end of my list.
roper, have you just made them up?
Sorry. Couldn't help it.
I dunno but I suppose the ones I tend to listen to in the car on my own are:
Foo Fighters
Muse
Guns and Roses
Blink 182
Queens of the stone age
But I also love dance, ballads that make me cry, as well as soul/mowtown and a bit of cheese....
in November it was mainly CCR, October it was The Roots and December is looking like Screaming Trees, mainly for Dust as it reminds me of Christmas for some reason and is an album I always return to. If I had to pick an all time favourite band it would be really difficult. Clutch would definitely be in the running for best rock band though.
Saw them last night - Pixies
It is really hard, even bands I really like have had a duff album or 2.
RHCP (but not what they have done in the past 10 years)
Jamiroquai (again not what they/he has done in the past 10 years)
Portishead (I only listen to dummy)
Air (I only ever listen to moon safari)
Clash (plenty of crap to go with the great in their catalogue)
Radiohead (only the bends and ok computer and a couple of other single tracks)
The doors (plenty of crap to go with the great in their catalogue)
Madness (great for nostalgia and I just love them anyway)
The specials (plenty of crap to go with the great in their catalogue)
but they are the ones I mostly keep returning to year after year while other fade out of my playlists.
The Cure
The Smiths
Killers
Oasis
Stone Roses
The Wailers
Daft Punk
The Clash
Velvet underground
The specials
QOTSA.
The Fall.
Slade.
The Smiths
Depeche Mode
New Order
The Jam
The Clash
Jeepers - I forgot soul! Most of the best are solo acts but the supremes, Earth wind and fire. chic all need to be up there as well
JLS (Posting for DD)
Fatuous Stadium Wernkers
The Patronising Dickheads
Grim Humourless and Meaningfull
Bright Little Girlies with The Attitude
Bandwagon Flavour of the Month
I suspect the first three refer to U2? Fair enough, BUT...
I would still include them in my top five. Not because of anything they have done since 2000, but for what they did between 1978 and 1994. So:
U2
Big Country
Crowded House
The Smiths
Credence Clearwater Revival
Pace the fact that there are many I have to leave off if limiting to five...
Hard to say but Fleetwood Mac must be up there
The Kinks
Small Faces
The Who
The Jam
December is looking like Screaming Trees, mainly for
.... Sweet Oblivion (adding to Dinosaur Jr)
Super Furry Animals
(Maybe The Smiths and Wilco)
The blackheads (especially when Ian Dury was around)
Kasabian
Queens of the stone age.
Muse
Prodigy
Deep purple
Lynerd Skynnerd
I really can't understand what so many people see in the smiths or anything about Neil morrissey, he's so depressing!
I would actually add that I think Twenty One Pilots should make an early entry into the top rankings of bands.
The Pogues (before Strummer got involved)
Muse
Smiths
The Jam
Anything with Terry Hall (criminally under-rated)
Joy Division.... thread over
Best or favourite...? The bands that I love are not the best bands by most standards, but the way they make me feel...

Me too. I hate to say it - it was very disappointing. Seemed to be going through the motions IMO. Didn't help that all the way through I was standing behind some idiot. She clearly thought the rock 'devils horns' gesture was the most cool and also profound thing ever...

I took it as they were just getting on with it, firing them out without any messing.
I didn't see much either though, ended up down the front and was thrown around like a rag doll for most of it...
JLS
Take That
One Direction
E17
NSYNC (swoons).
Come to think of it, The Police were fantastic as well.
Sorry. Double post.
Based purely on the best live performances I have been to:
Thin Lizzy
AC/DC
Jethro Tull
Blowzabella
Jules Holland and The rhythm and blues orchestra
NOFX
The dwarves
Tankard
Prong
Consumed
The blackheads
😆
The correct answer is...Velvet Underground.
Not my favourite group but they are the best band ever.
Based on those I still regularly listen to and in no particular order (except the first)
Any Zappa band (though ideally with Ray White and Ike Willis)
Pink Floyd!
Yes!!
Genesis!!!
Oh that's only 4.
OK, a different Zappa band with Ruth Underwood on percussion.
But although I don't listen to them as much, the Beatles, at the time, were astonishing. Whatever style they happened to be doing at the time.
James addiction (first 3 albums)
Smiths (everything)
Ride
Velvets
Spiritualised
So totally subjective, and really, an impossible thing to say, because, unless you have a really one-dimensional taste in music, ie you only listen to one particular band/artist, then changing taste and mood will alter what choices are made.
Personally, based on bands I've actually seen, and whose music I loved from first hearing, then:
Led Zeppelin
Arcade Fire
Talking Heads
Fleetwood Mac
Elbow
Goldfrapp
Of course, there are loads of really great bands who I love, but it would be difficult to justify labelling them as best band ever, bands like
The Drink
Howling Bells
Belly
Lush
Dinosaur Jr
Metric...
All of whom I've seen, whose music I really adore, but I find it really difficult to elevate any to 'best band ever'.
Arcade Fire may well be, at least for me, possibly the best, their music is beautifully written, played and performed, is intelligent, epic in scope, but their live performances are on a level above pretty much anything I've ever seen by anyone else.
With the singular exception of Kate Bush, but she's really a solo artist.
The one's that have been mentioned which I fully agree with;
Janes Addiction
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
RATM
Pink Floyd.
Haven't read the whole thread but I didn't see these mentioned;
Aerosmith
Guns n Roses
Are Daft Punk a band?? I would have thought them/it would be classed as a DJ.

They are indeed a brilliant band. Their first album is one I still regularly play and the other three are all great in their own way.
GNR (pre Chinese Democracy)
Velvet Revolver
Deftones
Incubus
Magnum
8)
Round 2
Pavement
The clash
Tube-way army
Belle and Sebastian
Pixies
James
Doves
Big Country
New Order
Rolling Stones
