Has anybody actually experienced any cold weather yet? The forecasters have been predicting sub zero conditions all week but there isn't even a frost here in Essex this morning - car windscreen clear. I went out on the bike over the weekend and it was a bit windy but certainly not cold.

I wonder if it's the usual hype and exaggeration and all we'll get is a few snow flurries.

Isn't that the point though - The air is so dry that there isn't enough moisture for frosts to form? -3 When I left this morning and no frost which was very unusual, if and when the snow comes it will settle straight away. Clear skies in Worthing, in Eastbourne now and a few light flurries. Was out on the bike at half 7 yesterday and it was cold enough!

Back in the ‘olden days’ it was classed as normal weather in winter. Since global warming and the race to create headlines it is now something special.

So it used to be common and yes because air is from the east it is drier therefore no haw frost.

Yesterday I was out on the road bike, roads completely dry, thought it was quite mild, then went past a massive patch of ice which made me think it must be cold. I then dropped in to a valley and was met by a horrible head wind that was ****ing freezing.

The ‘beast from the east’ is nice calm cold weather. When it gets windy that’s when the windchill makes it feel uncomfortable

make the best of dry roads/trails while you can. Only -3 here this morning 🙁

Snow fairly heavy in City of London - not really settling though.

Was minus something or other with light snow when we left the house on the north downs.

no haw frost.

Hoar frost.

Was in Sweden last year, and it had been still for ages - the ice crystals about an inch long formed on all the trees, it looked like it had snowed. Beautiful.

Snow in Manchester? Bright sunshine at Piccadilly.

Very keen cold wind around Lyme Park yesterday, so must have been bitter higher up.

It's clear as anything in Cardiff, but cold as a cold thing.

I just returned from a week in Belgium where it was extraordinarily cold. So I can imagine that, if that's what we've got coming our way, then for the first time ever, the media aren't exaggerating.

the race to create headlines it is now something special..

I have to agree with this. It's February, it's supposed to be cold. If it was this cold in June then it would be worthy of the coverage it's getting.

-4 and snowing/bright sunshine cyclingn into brum this morning. Toes were cold but I’d otherwise judged my layers perfectly and it was a lovely ride in. Happy days.

Tomorrow looks less lovely.

I'm hugely disappointed so far. I even brought the Guinnea Pigs indoors after forecasts of -10 and colder temps, but this morning was a lovely cold and crisp morning with light snow flurry's and maybe only -1 or -2. Hope it gets colder as the week goes on.

Having just take a look at the forecast and warnings it's worth the coverage, dry snow, decent amount forecast and winds to drift it or end up with blizzard conditions.

Train companies are cutting services and expecting disruption, the UK road network struggles on nice days and in many areas that are due for the worst of it are at capacity. In general people are under prepared for weather like this and expect to carry on as usual.

Snow is falling across the UK as bitterly cold weather is swept in from Russia.

A wind chill means that during the day it will feel like -10C to -15C.

Yellow and amber weather warnings for snow are in place for Monday and Tuesday, covering southern and eastern England before extending to cover the Midlands, Scotland and Wales.

Some train services in the south east of England will stop running on Monday night as a precautionary measure.

Wednesday and Thursday's yellow warnings will also cover Cornwall, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

By Wednesday night, more than 20cm of snow could have accumulated in some parts of eastern England and Northern Ireland, say forecasters.

Were the "olden days" back when Mammoths roamed the land?

Average Daily High Temps for Feb (in London which is the only place I can find data for) is 7c for Feb 1st and 10c for Feb 28th. It's currently -1c ambient and snowing. 'The Beast from the East' is actually the wind giving a 'feels like' temp of -5c.

As a lot of people have said, it doesn't seem as bad where it's dry - but it can catch you out. I drove over Caerphilly mountain this morning, lovely sunny day, climate set to 21.5c and for a moment forgot is was -3 outside, until I drove towards Castle Coch and slide on a massive sheet of ice caused by a little stream that crosses the road. I was doing about 8mph at the time

Weather is likely to get colder and more 'wintery' as the week progresses. That's from the Met Office, not the ****ing Express. Friday is likely to be -2 to -4 with a 'feels like' temp of -10 and snowing.

On this day every year since 2009 it's been between 8c and 12c as far as I can tell.

Cold, but not as cold as I expected in the Thames valley this morning, probably because the easterly wind hit's London first which seems to be taking the brunt of it.

Snowing though, I've got the fat bike ready and waiting to go having missed the snow in December!

Ha ha, I'm 40 so lay in that void between Boomer and Millenial, we're the ****ers who like to base stuff on fact, not on some rose tinted memory of the past or how we 'feel' it should be. Mostly I'm a bit of a weather nerd.

2009 to 2017 was the only data I had to hand. It 'should' be overcast, drizzly and about 9c today.

Bleedin' facts getting in the way of a bit of fun cynicism eh? 😉

I'm not sure if I admire or despair at the commuter cyclists without gloves today, especially the guy in shorts.

MTB ride on Saturday was lovely, crisp trails and barely any wind, so as long as fingers, toes, ears and nose were kept warm it was lovely to be out.

I then took the road bike for a shake down ride on Sunday...... same theoretical temperature but the wind had got up, and toes and fingers were numb in no time due to the windchill, and then cycling head down into the wind on the way home, even with a fleece skullcap on the cold wind through the front vent was distinctly nasty. Glad it was only a 45 minute shakedown, i was proper cold by the time I got back.

I was in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. The warmest it got was -8 deg C, the coldest was nearer -30. Had the pleasure of my first fat bike experience in proper snow in -20 deg C. Great fun riding the groomed trails. Once the snow hits they ride around the trail centres with fat tyre'd motorcycles in order get them groomed for fat bikes. Great experience, still don't want one though.

Back in Balmy Hampshire now. The car told me it was -4 this morning, bit snowy but no snow day.

No, 'beast from the east' is a fun media name for a weather event that only happens every few years as a result of sudden stratospheric warming, it's quite an unusual and infrequent event. There's some interesting info about it online in the last week or two, have a look and learn something.

Hardly any snow at all. 🙂

Snowing here, near Gatwick, right now. It's quite a flurry at the moment, but it's been on and off all morning.

Just nipped around the Bingley Bash. Pretty much perfect conditions (for winter, anyhow). Not feeling too cold with the right layers and appropriate level of effort...

Myth? All it means is easterly winds, and those we have, so no not a myth at all.

It's much colder than the seasonal average. Before whinging about scientists maybe learn some science?

I was walking to school during that winter, I was the first kid at my school to wear long trousers, my mum bought them because she thought it was just too cold to wear shorts!

This was in North Wiltshire, where I still live, I was nine then, us ‘southern softies’ had just as much snow down here.

In 2001 I moved back to Scotland from Yorkshire at the end of Feb. My parents live in the Borders and at started snowing on the Monday when we dropped the hire van off in Berwick. I drove up the A68 to Edinburgh for a job interview in the afternoon and couldn't drive back because they closed the road at Soutra. It was Thursday before they managed to clear the roads to my folks house but they'd had no electricity for about three days, they had a log burning stove which could only really heat the living room as the only way to draw the hot water away was by running the hot taps. So if they were cold they had a hot bath. I drove down with supplies of food and batteries and the roads were like singletrack roads with massive walls of snow on either side.
