He's no Major Les Hiddins.

If you liked Les Hiddins you'd love Malcolm Douglas. He was biting the heads of centipedes before BearG was a bear.

Mears by a country mile

Bear stays in a 3* hotel
Mears whittles himself a 3* hotel complete with jacuzzi out of what he finds around him 8)

Seriously though, Mears' book is a real insight into his philosophy of being one with nature, and leaves me in awe of the determination and depth of his learning and accomplishment.

Mind you, I grew up reading Eddie McGee and watching Jack Hargreaves - I reckon old Jack would have beat them all 😀

Are either 100% kosher? Old Mears hardly looks like his been living off a natural, basic diet?

I've always wondered how he got (or gave himself?) the moniker 'Bear'... he's not exactly at all like one is he?

His sister nicknamed him Bear when he was a week old. And it stuck.

My step dad was in the army with Eddie McGee.
He hunted down a murderer down to a shed in the 80s IRC.

Perhaps it was 'bare' as in bare naked she called him, and he changed the spelling... 8)

Barry Prudom (wikipedia says)...

I remember being enthralled by the manhunt as I had been reading an Eddie McGee book around the same time.

I think it's because his given name is Edward - Ted or Teddy is short for Edward, so Teddy Bear...
