So who really won?

Seems to me the Australian mining company did. Some short/medium term benefit to Tyndrum, and massive profits for investors/mining company which will sail out of Scotland (and the UK).

It would be nice to see a follow up in 5 years time and see how the villagers feel.

I sadly and cynically suspect that there will be some severe resentment in the community. I feel a very small number from the town will make a lot of money (but nowhere near as much as people who probably couldn't even find Scotland in an atlas without looking at the gazetteer and the rest will be making a modest living).
