I will keep my opinions on R Kelly's Ignition Remix to myself for now, and instead pick a more acceptable unnaceptable musical act.

Levellers is a great album!

On the R Kelly vibe

Lostprophets, anyone?

(For completeness: I don't like either of them and neither should you!)

This always reminds me of more care free innocent times. In my head I think many viewed them as descending into cheesy britpop blandness when they achieved a bit of success, but ive always enjoyed most of their stuff.

IMO Dodgy are quite underrated.  Classic guitar pop, loads of catchy hooks, great songs, i'm not at all embarrassed to like them!

A lot of music from my youth provokes a memory of long summer days with friends, enjoying the sun and the company. Which is nice. I grant you that most summers were not long sunny days, and it's rather rose tinted. But I still listen to some Dodgy when I'm skiing and have a brief carefree escape from the unending grind of middle-aged life.

The Weeknd's Blinding Lights

Brilliant tune, proper 80s revival synth pop.

Pure shores is a really good tune to be fair!

Agreed.. William Orbit produced it which explains a lot.

Not so much bands but genres? I like a good youtube jukebox guilty pleasures music session sometimes. Ends up mostly 80s stuff, the kind of thing I wasn't into as a kid but appreciate now (Duran Duran, Bryan Adams, Madonna, Springsteen, Elton John, the lot) but also a lot of 60s-70s American prog/stadium rock (Yes, Boston etc).

For their indescribably bad cover version of Comfortably Numb alone, they should be first against the wall! Absolute bloody sacrilege!

It's a good song, made great by its continuing ability to wind up pretentious Pink Floyd fans.

Anyone who tells you that something you have under A should be under B can, well, go stuff themselves

Even if that something is Lostprophets?

I love the levellers, I saw them at Brid Spa back in the day -still do love them, really.

But with my age now, the lyrics just scream middle class naive kids pretending to be edgy... and the singer.. I mean c'mon, what guitar does he play? I think it's a vintage Martin D-18 or D-21... hardly the weapon of choice for a band of vagabonds trying to 'smash the system'.

Cringe.

But good cringe, lol.

Taylor Swift?

I wouldn't be likely to put her albums on at home but not that long ago my sis had some synthy, mellow almost prog house inspired pop music on in the car and asked what it was. "do you like it?" "yeah, it's good... " "ha, gotcha, it's Taylor Swift!"

Then we had a car journey a while back when my niece sang along every word for 3 tracks in a row, and both nieces are getting pretty good at music (drums and guitar, singing well in front of others) with her as inspiration. So all in all, that plus her donations - I know, easy when you can afford it but not all do - and anti-Trump position? Call me a fan.

Not sure the 'middle class' accusation is particularly fair but some of their lyrics are proper cringe - I always struggled with stuff like One Way and Beautiful Day. But I think the policital stuff holds up ok. And tbf they played the music industry very cleverly and contributed to a lot of political causes over the years.

As a non-guitarist I can't comment on the semiotics of guitar choice although I would say that you can't really do someone down for 'pretending to be edgy' and then say they should be playing an old beater just for the image!

If its your job your buy good tools? If he's swapping martins with the occasional '58 les paul thrown in during a set, its maybe getting a bit lah-dee-dah

Ah but you know that if we included anything that was cringe, or in retrospect really naive, we'd be here forever! One Way is a cracking song; Another Man's Cause too. And sure, in our 40s/50s/60s we can appreciate it's naive/ cynical/ whatever, but at the time it felt more meaningful.

Another one I'll throw into the mix. Madonna.

80s Madonna has some fantastic tracks - Like a Prayer, Papa Don't Preach, Isla Bonita, etc. Ray of Light is a great album. Aaaand, some of the William Orbit stuff was also good - every time I hear the intro to Gimme Gimme Gimme by Abba I secretly hope it's the Madonna track that used that sample.

Also, Backstreet Boys. Not all of it, sure, but I Want it That Way is a stone cold banger that I can only admit to liking when I'm quite drunk.

Point of order - that track was produced by Stuart Price, not William Orbit.

Stuart Price is an absolute don and did a load of amazing pop remixes under the name Thin White Duke - and managed the remarkable feat of getting me to like a Starsailor song. Honestly, as dance-pop stuff goes, this track literally could not be executed any more perfectly IMO:

Weirdly, although it didn't really do well in the UK, I was in Argentina summer 2005 and it was absolutely everywhere

Similarly, Proclaimers. Absolute pish, except for that one when drunk.

oooh, another one: the Proclaimers. Once you get beyond 500 Miles - which has just been overplayed, rather than being inherently bad - there are some lovely songs in there. Sunshine on Leith, Over and Done With, This is the Story, Letter from America (despite their wilful mispronunciation of 'Cana-DAA').

"people keep telling me I look like one of the Proclaimers. They're identical twins you ****, surely I look like BOTH of them"

He produced some of Kylie and Madonna's best dancey stuff as well IIRC, arguably the noughties dance music MVP.

Also did "that tune from the transformer Citreon advert" as Les Rhythm Digitales I think?

I resent that. But my preferred era of Floyd is Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Ummagumma.

Christ they were shit back in the day, and I went to see them again (uni reunion sort of thing) a few years back and walked out of the gig. Utter crap. Them, and Pink Floyd too.

I've got a soft spot for Beyoncé (Cowboy Carter is amazing!), Shakira and all that lot. And Charlie XCX. And going back in time: there was nothing cool about Banarama, particularly once they "sold out" to Stock/Aitken/Waterman, but they've got some cracking tracks 🙂

Seriously? they have quite a few tunes which could be called classics and are great live.

Sunshine on Leith

Cap in Hand
Then I Met You
Letter from America
Lady Luck

Just a few of my favourites
