My contribution, Gene. I always loved the album, Olympian.

Some beautiful music:

Whole thing[/url]

Beautiful, haunting, heartfelt and romantic, with some groovy underpinnings.

And not just because it's soppy and my most dramatic ex. gave it to me ๐Ÿ™‚

Pop Will Eat Itself and very early Jesus Jones. Mixing samples lead guitars and rapping, singing and very good imagery. Led the way for a lot of music.

Mike Finnigan is a longtime friend. He went on from this band to become the world-class sideman for such acts as Dave Mason, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joe Cocker and Bonnie Raitt. This is the band he was in in 1972, Finnigan and Woods. This cut from their album "Crazed Hipsters" is the most rockin', burning cover of a Dylan song ever. You will forget Hendrix's "Watchtower" after you hear this one.

PWEI are probably best forgotten, saw them when they were supporting loads of indie bands , they were terrible. How about a bit of easterhouse

I know DJs still ocassionally play Sergeant Rock and Senses Working Overtime, yet surely XTC are woefully under-remembered? Swindon's finest and one of the world's greatest ever bands. I feel they were always criminally under-appreciated from the outset.

Oui3. Really liked their stuff when I was at school at uni, but they sort of fizzled out and went away.

Still appreciated - BillytheTrumpet played "Sense is Working Overtime" when England were 123-5

I've got a few things in my collection Northwind would like ๐Ÿ™‚

Now, I nominate Eat. They were around the same time as PWEI, Wonderstuff etc, but their music lasts the test of time much better for me. I believe Ange Dolittle is a lost genius. Brilliant lyricist and singer.
I once saw them supporting James. Eat were so good I left before James came on cos I didn't want them to ruin it ๐Ÿ™‚

Not their best track, but it fits with the thread title

I always liked PWEI. Saw the remnants of them live, supporting Carter a few years back, they were pretty dire. Shame.

"Smurf Robot And The Marzipan Bikers" or "Penguins In My Head". I certainly don't hear much about them these days.

Also, pretty recent:
A.Human. Another lost genius singer. Saw them with a mate in a tiny pub and they (especially him, he was nuts) blew us away. Since lost a few band members, tried to go pop and went.. parp. Sad.

@bikebouy - some of us have not forgotten Harriet from the Sundays

we seem to be mostly mentioning bands hardly anyone had heard of in the first place. In which vein, I give you

The Wolfhounds. But I echo the mentions of PWEI. So inventive with their mixing and the lyrics " the rhythm it smokes more than a beagle". Easterhouse as well, Contenders is a fantastic album.

Poppies were ace back in their day. Growing up round Stourbridge in '89 probably helped.

The last time they played together was the reformation gigs in '95...brilliant. Saw Graham's version last year with Mary Byker and was underwhelmed.

Eat were ace. Saw them a few times in the old days.

My suggestion from that era..Family Cat. Their first EP still sounds great.

The Wildhearts. That fella certainly has the knack of writing a catchy tune. And a greater knack for career self-sabotage every time the prospect of substantial success beckons.

Idlewild are still going. They had a new album out not so long ago. Hugely hugely underrated when you look at the inexplicable popularity of some other scottish bands (ahem).

The Wildhearts.

Ginger's still rocking! This is about the only good thing Courtney Love has ever done, though.

(Sweary intro)

He sure as hell knows to to write a catchy hook, and some riffage. Top of the World worth a mention as well!

Good call on the Senseless Things!! I was just thinking about them. I was also somehow reminded of the New FADS the other day- I'd forgotten about them for about twenty years. Saw them live at the Windsor Old Trout back in the early nineties. Lovely!
